A member of an armed civilian group that roams the U.S.-Mexico border was charged with allegedly impersonating a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
James Benvie was named in a federal indictment on two counts of impersonating an officer or employee of the United States, according to ABC 7 KVIA.
Benvie reportedly serves as the spokesman for the Guardian Patriots, a group that split off from the United Constitutional Patriots, both civilian groups that detain migrants at the border.
The incidents in which he is facing charges occurred on April 15 and 17 in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.
