A social network for knitting just made every other website look like goddamn cowards

New Policy: Do Not Post In Support of Trump or his Administration
Sunday, June 23rd 2019

We are banning support of Donald Trump and his administration on Ravelry.

This includes support in the form of forum posts, projects, patterns, profiles, and all other content. Note that your project data will never be deleted. We will never delete your Ravelry project data for any reason and if a project needs to be removed from the site, we will make sure that you have access to your data. If you are permanently banned from Ravelry, you will still be able to access any patterns that you purchased. Also, we will make sure that you receive a copy of your data.

We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy.

Policy notes:

You can still participate if you do in fact support the administration, you just can’t talk about it here.
We are not endorsing the Democrats nor banning Republicans.
We are definitely not banning conservative politics. Hate groups and intolerance are different from other types of political positions.
We are not banning people for past support.
Do not try to weaponize this policy by entrapping people who do support the Trump administration into voicing their support.
Similarly, antagonizing conservative members for their unstated positions is not acceptable.

that they took the language of the ban almost verbatim from a role-playing game site I frequent. RPG.net banned any posts in support of the administration a few months back, and it clearly there’s enough crossover in the hobby that our silly little elfgame forum inspired Ravelry.

“Much of this policy was first written by a roleplaying game site, not unlike Ravelry but for RPGs, named RPG.net. We thank them for their thoughtful work.”

A win for social justice.

I wouldn't be surprised. That man has broken so many barriers in his life time. What an amazing fellow he is !

Years ago, I was flying between FL and WA and the man next to me pulled out yarn and a crochet hook. I was gobsmacked. I remained silent until I could stand it no longer and asked him about his project. It was a sweater. He explained that he took up crochet to settle his nerves and "enhance his calm." He said that he used to have a horrible temper and wanted to lose it, so he learned to crochet. It must have worked.

I could be wrong though.

There is a kid out on the internet that is a genius with a crochet hook.

I find crocheting to be calming. In these horrid times I am enjoying it.

We have a section for off topic, non tech stuff and the administrators had to institute a no political speech policy after the off topic forum got too toxic to handle. Great for Ravelry for not going down that road.

Husband and wife Casey and Jessica Forbes founded Ravelry in May 2007. Their idea was to create a web presence for all fiber artists. Ravelry is a place for knitters, crocheters, designers, spinners, and dyers to keep track of their yarn, tools and pattern information, and look to others for ideas and inspiration.
Ravelry - Wikipedia

While I love and follow Stephanie Pearl-McPhee she is not a founder. She is one of the first to join and has been a great supporter. Say Hi, to Mrs. Aristus from another raveler.....

Casey asked us, well before trump was elected, not to go political. He wanted to remain apolitical. In my experience, They have been more than fair. Ravelry has more than 8,500,000 members world wide. My membership number is about 32,600. I have no idea what year that was. This is the best and kindest group I have ever 'met' on the internet. If there are a few nasty knitters that get their "knickers in a twist" we are fine with that. What I like is that this will mean more people will hear about us and sign up to play with sticks and string or join us as happy hookers... Cheers

For anyone who wants to know what liberalism is, this example has liberalism written all over it, including their determination to be inclusive of and fair and protective to all, but standing against wrong by not allowing promotion of white supremacy on their site. We can be quite sure they vote too.

The two office Church Ladies have not only forsworn the site itself (the argument in essence is, "How does Ravelry consider itself inclusive if it is excluding white supremacists?&quot , and are now, for reasons known only to their dull-witted little minds, avoiding knitting entirely.

Their boycott of Big Knitting has the office giggling at them.

Well, more than normal.
