AOC was right to compare Trump's border internment camps to concentration campsBy Andi Zeisler
We're debating the description of forced extrajudicial detainment of a rhetorically demonized racial minority in harsh, punitive conditions.
Oregon became the 11th state in the nation to mandate that public schools teach students about the Holocaust and other genocides, just last month. As an American Jew, who attended public school in the late 1970s and 1980s, I was surprised to hear that learning about a defining piece of world history apparently requires specific legislation...
Before you could ask war profiteers daughter says what? Twitter had become a pedantic Hydra of arguments that were less about the actual existence of such camps than about what we should be calling them. (For the record, concentration-camp historians agree that using the general term concentration camp to describe conditions at the border is accurate.)
Since Cheney mentioned it, though, theres a reason that people mostly, but not exclusively, Jewish people say Never again when referring to the Holocaust...
But its also a shibboleth against complacency, a reminder that what happened in those camps didnt happen overnight, but were the yield of an ideological campaign involving the active persecution of groups deemed inferior...

(21,111 posts)Concentration camp was our top lookup on June 18th, 2019, following the use of the word by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and subsequent contretemps over whether such was appropriate or not.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the liberal freshman Democrat from New York who has made fighting for immigrants rights a signature issue, on Tuesday described the Trump administrations border detention facilities as concentration camps, provoking backlash from Republicans who said she was minimizing the Holocaust.
Sheryl Gay Stolberg, The New York Times, 18 Jun. 2019
What does concentration camp mean?
A short definition of concentration camp is a place where large numbers of people (such as prisoners of war, political prisoners, refugees, or the members of an ethnic or religious minority) are detained or confined under armed guard used especially in reference to camps created by the Nazis in World War II for the internment and persecution of Jews and other prisoners.

Reading this description was so scary as this is what these migrants are being held in and SOC is 100% correct in calling these camps concentration camps. Fat Donnie and his thugs need to be arrested for international crimes against humanity.

(23,637 posts)Nazi concentration camps, it became almost exclusively connected to the Holocaust. But we could also call them "internment camps". The US's other dark episode in rounding up non-white people was the internment of Japanese Americans for 4 years during WWII. Internment camps, concentration camps, pig-stys; they are an abominable, wretched way to treat human beings.
Trump and anyone in his disgusting administration involved in this should be charged with child abuse, child endangerment and man (child) slaughter.
If any parents treated their children like this, they would be hauled off to jail and their children taken away from them.
