(11,949 posts)The people that did/lost the most to defeat the Nazis were Stalins Russians who went on to oppress Eastern Europe as they previously had the Ukraine, where they created a genocide, and all of Russia.
Were they good guys? They were not fighting to make the world safe for democracy.
And I agree we are coming up on the whole DU changing history season. August is just around the corner.
But it gets complicated.

(11,949 posts)Told me life was grey and never trust anyone who explained it in Black and White. Politician, boss or preacher.
That had been my guiding light since. Not sure he would approve it would lead me to being the Freethinker I have become.
But I imagine he would approve.

(11,949 posts)As did my ancestors in the Civil War.
But the question of the Soviet troops gets really grey. They did way more than the west to defeat the Nazis. Truth be told, even without D-Day they would have eventually defeated Germany. But they were attacked by the Germans. But in many ways were as bad as the Nazis.
Were the Russians good guys or bad guys?

To argue that one nationality or group of nationalities was/or is superior to others is not good IMHO.

(11,949 posts)While life may be full of Grey, the Nazis, who represented the Germans from from the early 1930s till 1945 were clearly evil and represented a ideology that needed defeating. As was the confederacy The grey comes in with the Soviet Union who in many ways were as bad as the Nazis. But were our allies in WWII.
Ive traveled enough to know individuals are pretty much the same. We want a good life and our children to have a better life. But not all societies work to make that goal a reality.
But most supported Hitler and the Nazis

(10,176 posts)Can you imagine the troops stationed on the coast that morning? As the sun came up the ocean as far as the eye could see was covered with ships. Depends on your source, around 6,000. Also the sky was filled with14,000 airplanes. They must of figured the gates of hell opened up on them.
Never anything close to it before or since (though if the war would have went on the invasion of Japan probably would have been bigger.
