(4,514 posts)But they also need people to pay taxes, people to fill their prisons and inflate their stocks and most importantly people do die in their wars. Consider that abortion was legal in this country until the end of the Civil War. They made it illegal because they needed women to breed to replace the men lost in the war.

(8,144 posts)low income women are all LatinX or black. We have numbers of low-income white women in America.
As well, racially diverse numbers of women in low-paying jobs, underemployed, self-employed, in college, before starting careers, and who are unable to travel due to various constraints, will bear the brunt.
It is important that more privileged white liberals do not frame the whole conversation around black and Latinx women.
A story about my own stupidity:
I once brought up lack of access to subsidized abortions in a class, years ago when financial constraints, not the law, threatened choice.
The professor, a socially liberal former Federal Marshall, a Latino man, said with a hint of disgust, I am not going there.
We had been talking about the relationship between family conditions and juvenile crime.
A young woman walked over to me from the back row and gently said in my ear, Look, I dont feel this way, but a lot of black people in this class think that white people talking about abortions are pushing racial genocide.

(21,602 posts)The same people that wail and gnash their teeth at the "browning of America," sure enough, are almost always the same ones that oppose birth control and access to abortion.
Which, of course, impacts minority women most, since white women are more likely to be able to find and afford alternatives when faced with these restrictions.
And to show there is some truth to the connection you brought up, one need only look at what happened in Argentina last year.
As in most majority-Catholic countries, abortion in Argentina has, since 1921, been legal only in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the mother's life. The Lower House of Congress there passed a bill legalizing abortion on demand up to the 14th week (and with a doctor's permission after the 14th week).
The unexpected passage of the bill created intense debate - and an uproar among right-wingers, who use a lot of the same rhetoric you hear from Rethugs here. Sadly, it failed in the Senate by 7 votes.
Now, these are the same people who constantly bemoan the "browning" of Argentina - which, like the U.S., has an eroding white majority due to immigration from neighboring countries since the 1960s.
You can go to any YouTube clip of Buenos Aires in the '40s, '50s or '60s, and there they are, bitching and caterwauling about "how much more European people were back then." Those comments always get the most likes.
But mention birth control and abortion, and they go nuts.
Cognitive dissonance in the flesh, I tell you. And it's exactly the same here.

(4,316 posts)This is their last gasp. There was a western I saw recently, and it was still about a white man being the hero, but they had a Mexican man as the one next in line for leadership. I thought, they won't be able to make the white man western again in 20 years. Hell or high water is the movie with Jeff Bridges.
Although thinking about it, I don't know when people of color are going to start taking over ranching and farming.

(17,984 posts)She was into eugenics for the betterment of poor people. Her point was that poor POCs had too many kids with too many problems.
"The Negro race has reached a place in its history when every possible effort should be made to have every Negro child count as a valuable contribution to the future of America," she wrote. "Negro parents, like all parents, must create the next generation from strength, not from weakness; from health, not from despair."
Her attitude toward African-Americans can certainly be viewed as paternalistic, but there is no evidence she subscribed to the more racist ideas of the time or that she coerced black women into using birth control. In fact, for her time, as the Washington Post noted, "she would likely be considered to have advanced views on race relations." https://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2015/08/14/432080520/fact-check-was-planned-parenthood-started-to-control-the-black-population
Taking this into consideration, there is really only one reason why legislators would want to stop minorities from having abortions: keep them in poverty. But it's a stupid way of doing it. Following the logic would mean that legislators are content with minorities burdening social welfare systems.

And Republicans have been on the anti-choice warpath for decades. This isn't a new thing. It's just that now they're within striking distance, especially with their drunken frat boy Brett Kavanaugh on the bench.

Bennett is being harshly criticized, but he says he is standing by his comments.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Congressional Democrats blasted former Education Secretary William Bennett on Thursday for saying that aborting "every black baby in this country" would reduce the crime rate, and demanded their Republican counterparts do the same.

(1,819 posts)I can't see how anyone would support politicians that want to take away their reproductive rights. They don't have the intelligence to see themselves in a situation were they or their partner would need an abortion and they can't see how this is a slippery slope that could impact the day after pill, birth control and other forms of birth control.
They are far too deep in their cultural bullsh*t to see how this could be terrible for them personally.
These people quite frankly are just Dumb!

(10,129 posts)And all of those other uppity women who are insisting that they be treated as human beings. If they had just stayed home and produced children like good little women (yeah, yeah, Pelosi has several children, but the GOP knuckle-draggers don't let facts and logic get in their way) the country would still be run by god-fearing white men like the founders intended.
I tend to agree with the OP: the conservatives who are trying to push the country back to some mythical time long, long ago when well-off men of predominantly Anglo-Saxon background were in charge are at core afraid of "the other". They look at sharing power as giving themselves a smaller share of the pie, rather than seeing that the pie has grown bigger, and there's plenty for everyone as long as no one gets greedy. Obama's elections were the last straw for them: rather than accept that the country is changing (as it has since the Constitution was first ratified) and adapt to reality, they will continue to some mythic past. I think this is part of what underlies the reverence for the Confederacy: in their eyes it was the peak of the Master Race against the uncouth immigrant not-real-American hordes of the North. And we're still fighting that mentality.

(9,761 posts)So this post is a repeat. But when my DH was at Wright Patterson AFB, a memo was sent out as required reading for all officers.
It discussed what it called the dying of the European culture. It talked about why the European culture was superior to all others. Then it proposed to save the European culture in the US by forcing women to have more (white) children.
It talked about starting with outlawing abortions and birth control. It talked about as education among women rose, birth rates fell. So it suggested limiting education for women and confining them to childbearing. To save European culture.
This was right out in the open, I think it was roughly 2006 or something like that.
So this push has been on for at least that long, probably longer.
