Democrats Emoluments Lawsuit May Proceed
April 30, 2019 at 6:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Democrats in Congress can move ahead with their lawsuit against President Trump alleging that his private business violates the Constitutions ban on gifts or payments from foreign governments, a federal judge ruled Tuesday, the Washington Post reports.
The decision in Washington from U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan adopted a broad definition of the anti-corruption ban and could set the stage for Democratic lawmakers to begin seeking information from the Trump Organization.

A federal judge on Friday gave the go-ahead to a lawsuit filed by nearly 200 congressional Democrats against President Donald Trump alleging he has violated the Constitution by doing business with foreign governments while in office.
The lawsuit, which was led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal is based on the Constitution's emoluments clause, which bars presidents from taking payments from foreign states. Trump's business, which he still owns, has hosted foreign embassy events and visiting foreign officials at its downtown District of Columbia hotel.

Blumenthal, the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit that includes 198 of his Congressional colleagues, hailed the decision, calling it "a milestone and a major break for the rule of law."
Congress has "a right and a responsibility to prevent the president from corrupting his office,'' Bumenthal said.
