Allen employs 600 people and owns eight 24-hour HD cable and broadcast networks, including Comedy.TV, Pets.TV, Cars.TV and The Weather Channel, which he acquired for about $300 million.

“It’s an American institution,” Allen said. “A lot of good people depend on it—farmers, pilots, the government, on and on and on. We just want to make sure that it’s the best 24-hour news and weather service.”

In recent years, the cable channel has slipped in popularity as consumers turn to the internet and mobile apps for weather information. Viewers also criticized the channel and its previous owners, Comcast/NBCUniversal, The Blackstone Group and Bain Capital, for airing too many taped docu-series instead of live weather forecasts.

Despite the criticism, Allen said he has no plans to make major programming or management changes at the cable channel.

6. May want viewers to stay tuned in longer rather than reliably showing local weather on the eights

They have also had a lot of technical problems lately with the software ransom hacking that occurred and they have been slow to bring back reliable local weather coverage since the hacking. I did see local on the eights yesterday and today for my area.

We keep it on a lot due to the extreme constant weather events affecting us. In my home, starting a month ago when Mueller probe fizzled out, we decided to lock out all network and cable channels that cover news and weather except PBS and the Weather Channel since my spouse was being so severely triggered into rages by the constant Trump coverage and political wrangling and lack of any positive developments. We cannot even watch our local ABC affiliate anymore as they are Sinclair owned and constantly airing propaganda segments.

Many of the modern cable systems have interactive smart channel streams that run along with the primary station tuner. On that parallel stream, customized weather reports are available at the push of a button.

It may simply be that local weather reports on the national channel are not the most effective use of its time when the information is available elsewhere.

The prescription ad problem is endemic to all of the cable channels. It is crazy how the "airways" are inundated with those ads. It used to just be boner pills and really mainstream ills like high blood pressure. Now I am struck by how many ads I see for very narrow markets.

... and stopped watching all weather stations for a long time now.
I just assumed most other folks are doing the same.

We have a flat black plastic antenna thing about the size of a piece of paper that lets us get our local KRON4 channel live. Their online app is terrible. It's super glitchy.

The WU app on my phone is the best one I've tried.

I haven't thought of the Weather Channel in years.

The Weather Channel is the only weather forecaster that forecasts the weather accurately, without sensationalizing it, the way many, if not most weather forecasters do.
