TUMWATER, Wash. -- The Tumwater UPS says they received 667 packages of playing cards Tuesday addressed to state Senator Maureen Walsh (R-Walla Walla), who came under fire when she opposed a bill mandating uninterrupted lunch breaks and rest periods for hospital nurses.
Walsh said last week, "I would submit to you those nurses probably do get breaks...they probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day."

The playing cards arrived after an apparent open letter to Walsh circulated on social media.
The letter included a photo of Walsh with her mailing address saying "send me a deck of cards!"
On Tuesday, Walsh said she agreed to shadow a nurse for 12 hours after taking heat for the controversial remark on the Senate floor.
The open letter:
This is an open letter to Senator Maureen Walsh -
You said that not all nurses deserve breaks as they just sit around playing cards while on shift anyway.
I dont know any nurses who play cards, Senator Walsh. I know nurses who care for babies who were born with their spines on the outside of their bodies and brains that wont stop bleeding. I know nurses who hold infants that cant stop crying because they were born addicted to heroin and meth amphetamines.
I know nurses who roll those same babies down to the morgue when they finally do stop crying. Do you think thats where they play cards, Senator Walsh?
I know nurses who care for patients that no one else cares about - the homeless, the forgotten and even the psychotic with the same dedication they would show a celebrity...or a Senator.
I know nurses who can go all night without food or a bathroom break. I know nurses with nerve damage and back pain from doing whatever it takes to take care of patients. I know nurses who cry in their cars. Do you think thats where they play cards, Senator Walsh?
I know nurses who are hard as steel when delivering life saving treatment to dying patients and softer than a whisper when delivering the news that it didnt work to the family. Do you think they all play cards together after that, Senator Walsh?
I know one nurse who is asleep in the next room right now after her second 12 hour shift of the holiday weekend. She left her shoes outside because she didnt want to bring all the blood and bile that she walked through last night into our home. I wish she could leave everything else from the hospital outside that easy. She cant. It stays with her.
Sometimes she doesnt want to talk about it. Sometimes she cant wait to talk about it.
Sometimes she laughs until she cries and sometimes she just cries but, regardless of those sometimes, shell be on time for her next shift.
She doesnt play cards either Senator Walsh - but I do. Thats how I made my living once upon a time before I met a nurse who changed my life. You and I have that in common. Nurses are going to change your life too.
Youll find out how right after the next election cycle. Youll have plenty of time to play cards and plenty of cards to play with yourself then.
Sincerely,
One of the millions of people who love a nurse

(11,514 posts)Sadly, men aren't the only ones spreading misogynistic lies. It's particularly awful when it's a woman spreading them. Walsh is in dire need of some consciousness raising, if that's possible. For those without a conscience, unfortunately, there isn't much hope.

I was addressing the institutionalized sexism and misogyny nurses face and did not intend to demean in any way the tremendous contribution others make to that profession. Sorry if I offended.

(3,145 posts)There was a brilliant post here the other day about the heartbreak a Nurse goes through
To be honest, I'm a guy in really good shape, I can work as hard a 12 hours as nearly any human on the planet. But I couldn't *BEGIN* to handle the emotional aspects of what nurses have to deal with, every single day. THAT is what the callous beyotch should have to encounter, a young mother taking her last breath as the family is in shock, a gunshot or car accident victim bleeding out...

I'd love for someone to film this 12 hours of shadowing, but it would violate patient privacy.

We like to think of ourselves as egalitarian. But there is no doubt that some people are simply better than others...

(58,605 posts)except for referrals and specialist visits. Hell, over 25 years ago, I was asked if it was OK if I saw a "nurse practitioner" instead of a "doctor" for a routine visit at my HMO. I was OK with it. I have known for a long time that a nurse with many years of experience knows as much and maybe more than a typical intern in his first few years of practice. Nurses see it all, and have rather practical attitudes about their patients.
I don't know about the real percentage, but I'd bet that most hospitals and clinics have senior nurses doing most of the front line work with patients and won't bother calling doctors unless they get in over their heads or need a certified approval or signature on a prescription. That's how it is at the VA.
Hell, I trust nurses. They care.

(23,952 posts)I'm an NP and have been since 1976. When I stated my current position almost 23 years ago, I had to tell our receptionists not to ask parents, "Would you mind seeing the nurse practitioner?" Asking people if they "mind" suggests that maybe they should mind. Medical practices would not hire us if they did not consider us highly qualified.
Just say, "I have a 10:00 AM appointment available with the NP, or a 2:00 PM with the doctor."

(6,831 posts)God Bless each and every one of you.
I am a V A patient. Everytime I go to the VAMC near me, I make a point of thanking the staff who assist me by telling them this:
"From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate and thank you for everything you do for me and all veterans. I know vets can be a cantankerous, impatient and at times, whiny, bunch of malcontents. Please know that I support you. Everyday. You folks are over-worked, underpaid, over-burdened and under-staffed - some clinics can be double- and triple-booked. Your dedication is awesome. Without you - on your side of the counter - folks on my side of the counter would be up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle. Please take good care of yourselves, as you all have loved ones and families that care for you."
And I am not above standing up in the waiting room and informing the impatient, bitchy vets that if they think they can get better, more professional medical care for the same price they are paying the VA (waaaaay below the national average for patient care) that they are free to go do so. There's the door. Good luck. (I got a standing ovation once from the nurses for that in the VAMC-Gainesville.)
