Measles Outbreak: As Many As 1,500 Exposed To Virus Across LA

More than 1,500 people across Los Angeles County may have been exposed to measles recently by five people with confirmed cases of the highly contagious infection. Los Angeles County health officials are working to contact the mainly airport workers and students at Cal State Los Angeles and UCLA to urge them to get tested.

The widespread exposure to the diseases is a major concern for health officials as pockets of communities around the nation battle outbreaks. That's because the vast majority of unvaccinated people exposed to measle will contract the disease. Infected people can expose others around them long before even know they are infected or develop symptoms. The virus can be transmitted from one person to another up to four days before the onset of the tell-tale measles rash, health officials said.

"We're very worried about measles," Department of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

She said the county is taking a three-pronged approach to dealing with the infection in the face of outbreaks in New York, Northern California and around the world, which includes efforts to reach out to everyone exposed and, if they are not vaccinated against measles, asking them to stay home for 21 days to avoid spreading the infection.

Ninety percent of people who are not immunized will come down with the measles if they come into contact with an infected individual, Ferrer said.

But the double-dose vaccine is highly effective and lasts a lifetime for those who have been immunized.

“We will likely see additional measles cases in Los Angeles County, so it is important if you or someone you know has the symptoms of measles or has been exposed to measles to contact your healthcare provider by phone right away before seeking treatment,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. “The best way to protect yourself and to prevent the spread of measles is to get the measles immunization, with two doses of measles immunization being about 97% effective at preventing measles.”

This is my first post on here, and in the interest of honesty, I’ll make it known that I’m a constitutional conservative. Normally I just like to lurk and read what “the other side of the aisle” is thinking, but this post actually inspired me to sign up so I can post this...

Screw anti vaxxers.

Seriously, left/right, dem/republican, etc... We should all be able to collectively come together and rally against these idiots. They’re truly making the world a worse place.

For welcoming me to the forum. I doubt I’ll post much since I’m more interested in others perspectives than interjecting my own, but in the rare occasions I do, it won’t be to troll. I honestly believe that both sides want the same thing, a better world, but politics being what they are, it’s difficult to come off as genuine when address our ideas to make that happen. That said, there are topics that we can all agree on, like the lunacy of the anti-vaxxer movement. Good day to you all.
