Russia wanted to disrupt the election and did not want Clinton to win at any cost. They supported Trump and used the division between Clinton and Sanders supporters to hurt Clinton. Sanders was not the second choice. They would have gone after Sanders had he won the primary.

Sander's rhetoric is very popular. He is espousing ideas that resonate with many of the people. My issue with Bernie is that he has had a blind spot for issues of race and gender and that his ideas are vague and not fleshed out into policies. We have to stop thinking of politics and our candidates as sporting events and our favorite athletes. Support your candidate but, after 7/16/2020 there will only be one. No whining or sulking.
