and was never arrested during the impeachment hearings. I just remembered that I watching a show about Watergate and how the guy who installed the taping system, Butterfield, thought he would have to testify eventually. But during the hearings Senator D-Ervin called his aide on live TV to go and get him out of the barber's chair and come in immediately to testify. Butterfield even saw Ervin telling his aide this while getting a haircut and three seconds later he gets a call at the barber shop to come in immediately.
I thought of this and how the Senate was able to do this during Watergate but not today during tRumpgate. Why? Today you have to have subpoenas, go to court, arrest people for contempt of court, etc.
The rules are the same so why is the outcome different. Why aren't the Dems allowed to call McGahn and anyone else without being met with resistance at every turn from the POTUS and his GOP pals?

"Ervin and his co-chair, Republican Sen. Howard Baker of Tennessee, decided to have Butterfield testify in public before the committee. Hamilton was tasked with getting him. Butterfield declined, saying he was too busy. Hamilton told Ervin.
Tell Mr. Butterfield that if he is not here this afternoon, I will send the sergeant-at-arms to fetch him, Ervin responded.
Ervin didnt have that authority, but Hamilton passed on the threat when he found Butterfield in a barbers chair. Butterfields testimony and the revelation of the tapes marked the beginning of the end for Nixon."

(38,000 posts)Butterfield had already revealed the taping system to committee staff investigators during a non-public question session before his public testimony. Dean had wondered about the possibility of taping and some other stuff happened that had the committee looking for evidence of it. Butterfield would never had told them about it if those staff investigators hadn't asked him about it.
