Treasury misses second Dem deadline on Trump tax returns

The Treasury Department on Tuesday missed a second deadline from House Democrats to provide President Trump’s tax returns.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a letter that the department can't act on the request "unless and until it is determined to be consistent with law."

He said that he expects Treasury to provide the House Ways and Means Committee with a final decision by May 6 after receiving legal conclusions from the Department of Justice.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) had given the IRS until Tuesday at 5 p.m. to comply with his request for six years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns. Neal said earlier this month that he would view a failure to provide the returns by the deadline as a denial of his request.

It's been the law for nearly 100 years.

going forward.

If there is no way to compel them to, for example, testify in proceedings or obey subpoenas, is there any recourse?

What happens if the executive branch, with the blessing of the AG, determines that Congress and/or the courts aren't the boss of him and he just declares himself dictator?

I'm actually concerned about this. There are no norms anymore, Senate/House Republicans will go along with it, without question.

be wrong about this.

But, so far, many of my worst expectations have come to pass.

This whole thing is a train wreck.

too many people still have their heads in the sand and think we're being overly dramatic, those of us who feel the danger we're facing. I'm scared to death for President Obama and Sec. Clinton. I mean, what's the first thing a dictator usually does?
