"SNIP....
For the first time No Religion has topped a survey of Americans religious identity, according to a new analysis by a political scientist. The non-religious edged out Catholics and evangelicals in the long-running General Social Survey, CNN reports.
Ryan Burge, a political scientist at Eastern Illinois University and a Baptist pastor, found that 23.1% of Americans now claim no religion. Catholics came in at 23.0%, and evangelicals were at 22.5%.

(24,398 posts)like it was fact, be it economic policy, human rights or whatever. Rs assert things to be true with no objective proof. In fact, they assert as being true things that are in direct opposition to established facts.
It isnt much of a stretch to see how this bears a lot of resemblance to religion, where fantasy is treated as fact. Anyone paying attention eventually reasons that if the words prove it present an impossible hurdle to any assertion being made that said assertion isnt worth wasting time over.
And thats how more and more people view the fantasies of religion.

(20,793 posts)Young people just don't comprehend waiting until they die to get the promised "answers."
Plus, religion requires local tribalism, and smartphones trample the concept of "them or us." To young people, we're all "us."
Ultimately, religion will not function in the daily lives of regular people.

(29,022 posts)If you really dig deep most people are pretty agnostic but may claim a religion because they grew up calling themselves such.

(38,350 posts)...doesn't have to give up any of those things to call themselves an atheist.
Fortunately many people become atheists because the reject *ALL* the crap that comes with right wing patriarchal authoritarian religions.

(146,351 posts)they don't believe in deities and other such supernatural things. Beyond that, they might hold any sort of views about anything. Atheism is not an organized thing in any way. You can't really assume anything if all you know is that someone is an atheist.
