Yes, Donald Trump has debased and defiled the presidency. He has launched blistering attacks on Democrats, on judges he disagrees with, journalists who criticize him and the intelligence community.
But McConnell is actively and willfully destroying the Senate.
Last Wednesday he used his Republican majority to cut the time for debating Trumps court appointees from 30 hours to two thereby enabling Republicans to ram through even more Trump judges.
McConnell doesnt give a fig about the Senate, or about democracy. He cares only about winning. On the eve of the 2010 midterm elections he famously declared that his top priority was for Barack Obama to be a one-term president.
Between 2009 and 2013, McConnells Senate Republicans blocked 79 Obama nominees. In the entire history of the United States until that point, only 68 presidential nominees had been blocked.

(535 posts)It would restore Obama's SC pick and undermine Mitch's efforts of the last decade. But best of all, it'd wipe that smirk off his face.

(2,600 posts)We may not have time to fix this if something happens to Ginsburg in the next 18 months plus 3, if - and that's not a guarantee - we Dems win the WH back. In the meantime, this sick fuck is jamming every court he has a say in with rethug extreme judges.

(535 posts)I'm in favor of anything that nullifies, undermines, or flat out undoes Mitch's dirty partisan tricks regarding the Judiciary. If we don't win back the WH after all this then I question whether we deserve to persist as a country.

(5,807 posts)ever again, as long as they control the Senate. And they intend to retain control of the Senate.
THAT'S their plan for one-party rule, ad infinitum.
I love reading Reich's column.
Thanx for posting.

(51,814 posts)A very interesting post. I totally agree with you. And why does he have so much power? Because he is the keeper of the illicit money? He is probably going to retire, so maybe he doesn't care about the country any more? Difficult to understand all of it.

(15,470 posts)I wonder what the "modern day" equivalent of the turmoil that led to the Dark Ages will contain.
When the Roman Republic devolved to a dynastic monarchy and devolved further to the "Holy" Roman Empire (throw in some religion there), the western world was set on its heels for many centuries.
All because of greed and ambitions of power; all was lost.
Still, maybe for the better. Several centuries later we had the Enlightenment which, for a while, gave us great knowledge and some wisdom.
Back we go, again.

(11,606 posts)McConnell is toxic and deadly to our democracy. His wife, Eliane Chao, is no saint either, and is deserving of a closer look, too. Together, they are quite the couple.
