(36,898 posts)Tabichi gets online educational content by visiting internet cafes and using them offline in class, according to his profile from the Varkey Foundation.
He guided the school's science club, in which students now compete in national and international competitions. The mathematical science team qualified to compete the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair this year in Arizona. His students also won an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry after using local plant life to generate electricity.
"Everyday in Africa we turn a new page and a new chapter. Today is another day," Tabichi told the foundation. "This prize does not recognize me but recognizes this great continent's young people."
(Something in my eye, too.)

(37,648 posts)because the children there cherished education and ate it up like candy. They were starved for it, unlike in America, where children seem to take things for granted.
I saw a documentary about a school in Africa (Oprah's school?), and it was true. Some of the children lived at the school because their homes were too far away to travel there. Others walked miles every day to and from. And they were attentive in class and worked like dogs. One child said, it was important for her to get an education; her whole family was sacrificing so she could become educated, since it was her only hope to get out of total poverty. It was very moving, seeing the serious children. The school meant life or death to them, figuratively and sometimes literally.
The govt of the country should do more for education. I don't know why the govts don't, if it's that they don't have the money or don't prioritize education or what.
I'm so glad this angel of a man won that huge prize. I hope his govt doesn't take most of it in taxes.
