When the leader of the Democratic Party states that its not worth it, its not worth it, said Blakeman, who was a member of the senior staff in President George W. Bushs White House. Its not because shes giving him a pass. Its because there are no high crimes and misdemeanors. They are just deflated that theres nothing there.

(39,370 posts)If she pivots, its only because the far left made her. She needlessly made the case for impeachment, which many informed people see as already quite strong, more politically complicated. Meantime, they get headlines like this:
Speaker Pelosi confirms what Trump has said all along about the Mueller investigation, says House GOP leader McCarthy

(26,060 posts)She made quite clear that when the evidence is there, she will impeach. McCarthy is lying because he's a pathetic, putrid scumbag. Speaker Pelosi was exactly right.

(39,370 posts)If its there at all. Too divisive, not worth it, oh, I know, that was Trump, not impeachment, but its being spun that way. If shes not happy with that, she could always come out and clarify, but I wouldnt hold my breath. Pelosi has routinely gone further than she had to when it comes to throwing water on impeachment. She did it in the midterms not a priority, and just this week. In both cases, a simple, we have to see where the investigations lead, would have sufficed. Instead, she creates the impression that it is all one great big political inconvenience.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)And she happens to be absolutely right and I see nothing wrong with pointing out that unlike the cons - she will not do something so incredibly divisive without a very good reason. The left may be chomping at the bit (and I don't blame them) but she's thinking ahead, to independents whose votes we're going to need in 2020 and if they see us as rabid dogs whose only message is anti-donnie, we will lose.

(39,370 posts)Who didn't think the GOP would jump on Pelosi's statement and spin it as a "win" for Trump? She won't impeach NOW because the GOP Senate will not convict. She's set a trap for them if and when Trump's "high crimes" are exposed by all current investigations.
I think it's a master political play by Pelosi.

It's looking like it will be up to the Judiciary to stop him. Apparently the Democrats yet don't have the will or the backbone to do so themselves.

(15,805 posts)Don't fall into the trap of believing anything Republicans say about Pelosi or her House Democrats. She terrifies them, and they are working overtime trying to diminish her powerful status and political gravitas, but they still look like yappy ankle biters in comparison.
Nobody plays politics like Pelosi. She has excelled as speaker for so long because she is a genius at seeing the Big Picture and outplaying the amateurish GOP. McCarthy and Trump took the bait, but Pelosi will outlast them all.

(39,370 posts)She gave them a good headline. Multiple, actually. Deal with it.
procon
(15,805 posts)Apparently, so did you. Pelosi has been in the House since 1987, and she's been Speaker and Leader since 2007, and she did not achieve that kind of power by making amateurish mistakes. If the Republicans are giddy, thinking Pelosi just proclaimed that Trump has led a blameless life, Pelosi is ROTFLHAO because she just outplayed them.

(15,805 posts)can be convinced of his crimes by a the strength of the preponderance of the evidence against him. Losing that battle will haunt Dems across the board. Pelosi has not stayed in power all these years by making foolish decisions, she knows what she's doing.
By letting her committees in the House continue their investigations without also being embroiled in an impeachment trial, we have a better chance of discovering the evidence needed to bring him down. Pelosi has given Trump all the rope he needs to hang himself because he now believes that he can speak freely and act without fear of being impeached.

So, we've got either an impeachment with no conviction or all of this nothingburder hogwash.

(17,111 posts)She has worked on The Hill for decades. She knows the people and the minutiae. She also knows the changes in the parties.
She deliberately put this message out for a purpose. I can guess all day about it, but it will be revealed in due time.
The GOP is so ready to spin things that they dont think it through. I am not spending one minute worrying about what Trumpkins think. I could care less. Its the rest of the people she is trying to reach especially those who are elected.
They are walking into a box.

(15,805 posts)savvy mastermind. Republicans, at their peril, refuse to recognise her consummate guile and her powerful understanding of the politicking in the House she runs. Pelosi is lulling Trump into a false sense of security, and he's taken the bait, chortling in the overweening belief that his arch nemesis has lost control of her party and the Dems are in total disarray.
Here's the thing, it would be counterproductive for Pelosi to rush to judgement before the evidence is in as it would make her less influential and weaken her credibility if it all fell apart. She doesn't need to force a vote right now anyway because the House is already pursuing impeachment tracks on multiple fronts with the Judiciary, Oversight and Reform, Ways and Means, and Intelligence committees holding concurrent investigations designed to produce irrefutable evidence, in conjunction with Mueller's report, to build an undeniable case for impeaching Trump.
Pelosi is well aware the timing, and in the run up to the election Democrats will be putting out all the negative information that comes out of the committee hearings. If something so explosive is discovered, it will impact public sentiment, and that is the only thing that might cut across party lines in the Senate and convince 20 Republicans to join Democrats in impeaching Trump.
