AOC responds to the accusation she threatened primaries

Again, didn’t threaten a primary.

I was upset that 26 Dems forced the other 200+ to vote for a pro-ICE provision at the last min without warning.

Because I think an agency that pins children down + forcibly injects them w/ antipsychotic drugs shouldn’t be given more power.

Remainder of thread:

“At [DHS immigrant detention] facility, children recounted being held down for forcible injections, which medical records show are powerful antipsychotics and sedatives.”

What I DID say was that I had to go back to my district & share the MTR vote to explain why a pro-ICE amendment was slipped into a gun safety law.

Maybe they’re mad bc I don’t believe pro-ICE expansion votes should be cast in the dark, and people deserve to know what happened.

#MomsDemand & #MarchForOurLives activists, who flew in from across the country, were watching from the gallery, crying + confused.

I ran up to them *during the vote* and explained that the gotcha amendment pinned gun safety against immigration advocacy. Its intent was to divide.

If you’re mad that I think people SHOULD KNOW when Dems vote to expand ICE powers, then be mad.

ICE is a dangerous agency with 0 accountability, widespread reporting of rape, abuse of power, + children dying in DHS custody.

Having a D next to your name doesn’t make that right.

Mind you, the same small splinter group of Dems that tried to deny Pelosi the speakership, fund the wall during the shutdown when the public didn’t want it, & are now voting in surprise ICE amendments to gun safety legislation are being called the “moderate wing” of the party.

We can have ideological differences and that’s fine. But these tactics allow a small group to force the other 200+ members into actions that the majority disagree with. I don’t think that’s right, and said as much in a closed door meeting.

It’s obvious that some Democrats who haven’t had an interesting idea for meaningful change for real people feel threatened by AOC and the new progressives. Some of them are from more conservative districts, like Manchin, and don’t want to rock the boat, but they can still reflect their constituency without attacking those from more progressive districts. Democrats attacking Democrats is a bad move and needs to be called out.

But MAN do we have a great Indivisible group here. Actually quite a few of them in the general Portland area. Ours is WAY active. A bunch of them are on the way to the Portland Womxn’s March this afternoon. I’m reluctantly staying home with a cold that seems to love me too much to leave me.

Last November I saw way too many Knute Bueler signs (supposedly a moderate “R”) around my area. But Governor Kate Brown prevailed. I’m just getting to know the lay of the land up here - we moved up from L.A. early last year. It appears we’ve got four Congressional districts that are small, geographically but loaded with people and true blue, and one very large, less populated district covering most of eastern Oregon, that’s red. I’m in the 5th district now.

I’m spoiled as hell. In L.A. we lived in the 33rd Congressional district with the glorious Ted Lieu as our Rep. Now I’m stuck with somewhat of a DINO (Schrader). But I LOVE this Indivisible group up here. They’re small but scrappy, and it’s just fabulous working with the activists in it. They’re really committed and they’re quite active.

I do business with two Oregon based companies, both have roots in agriculture there. I don't buy agricultural products from the first company, more like hard to get natural oils. But the second, I buy agricultural products for personal use. Both companies have a liberal social and political outlook. So, even in rural counties, there maybe farmers there are who will move there who are progressive, the old loggers and orchard owners were not, there are likely some of them around, but they are likely being replaced. You have a more conservative Dem now, but in one or two election cycles, you will likely have a more progressive Dem.

It is a time worn, age old tactic to hide poison pills in legislation to force members to make difficult decisions. Plus, of course, media types will inflate those things and use it to attack legislators.

It's not new. It has been done in every Congress since the beginning, and since the SC shot down the line item veto, there isn't much that can be done about it.

AOC seems to be weathering this storm, but it will happen again. Bet on it.

It is so very ironic that Trump went in saying he wanted to 'clean the swamp,' but his people pretty much ARE the swamp.

The real people who will be cleaning up said 'swamp' are AOC and the other newly elected Dems.

The good thing here: AOC doesn't care if she only serves one term. She is dedicated to to doing the RIGHT THING, not the thing that will get her reelected. If we had more people who have AOC's courage, we'd all be better off.

These poison pills are often put in laws and then when primary time comes, the opponent says, "Oh, why did you vote blah, blah, blah?" while full well knowing why.

AOC is now leaving a Twitter trail of WHY she did not vote for this.

The more light that is cast on people who insert these poison pill amendments to legislation, the better.

See, instead of calling AOC to account for voting AGAINST legislation because of such an amendment, perhaps we should find out who put that amendment into that legislation and hold them to account with some pointed questions and some publicity around their act.

If someone wants to challenge an incumbent, fine, but excepting for an extreme situation the Party shouldn't back them.

It's a Problem Because

1. It's time, energy and dollars that should be spent targeting and organizing against Republicans. 2. It jeopardizes
maintaining a majority in the House. 3. It divides the Party and is seen as an autocratic over reach throughout the electorate.

It also gets way out of hand:

AOC’s “hit list” now includes two popular, progressive house Dems for truly trumpian reasons. Kathleen Hunter (D-NY) is being targeted for not being charismatic enough. Hakeen Jeffries (D-NY) is being targeted for having the audacity to oppose AOC on a procedural vote.

Sat Mar 2, 2019, 11:50 AM
Mar 2019

Additional gun control policies require expanded powers by the ATF, "an agency that pins children down" when they are in the path of its enforcement, and is similar to ICE in many other ways.

ICE and the ATF work together routinely, and Ocasio Cortez's idea that one is evil and out of control, while the other deserves more power in the name of "safety" is, frankly, absurd.

See, for example:

https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-atf-prpd-arrest-22-firearms-trafficking

&

https://federalnewsnetwork.com/budget/2009/07/atf-ice-sign-mou-on-border-protection/

I encourage all Democrats, Ocasio Cortez included, to quit pushing more state powers in the name of gun control (which is quite different from actual safety) at a time when firearm deaths remain historically low, but economic inequality and related matters of health, housing, and environmental quality are at their worst crises ever.

You have managed to help me clarify my thoughts on this. In a time where law enforcement and all Three Letter Agency’s are pushing the boundaries between abuse of power and enforcement it is not the time to add power to them. If we in the name of safety grant more authority to them who do you think they will use it on? They are not going to harass me a middle age white guy about my firearms at all they will however use it in ways we can’t imagine against any minority. I’m worried new gun control legislation will be turned into Jim Crow era enforcement and get minority’s killed.

Recently here in Oklahoma me and a friend of mine where walking out of a Quick-Trip he is black, I am white both of us are prior military and both of us were armed and have permits to carry. We were slightly staggered coming out me out first. We walked past a cop I didn’t even notice him but I heard behind me as Steven gets asked “hey I need to see your permit for that” as I turned around I see the cop with his hand on his gun stopping Steven. I asked mine too? Cop asked next “are you with him?” I said sure am and we both have our licenses. I guess that was enough because the cop said,”well just know that’s printing a lot” as he points at Stevens side. Steven says “I will work on it” and we walked away. Now keep in mind here we are allowed both open and concealed carry so whether or not it’s visible doesn’t matter. Minority’s with gun = contact with law enforcement, White guy with gun = have a nice day.

To think she was caught unaware by this age old tactic is underestimating her. I think she knows exactly how the system of attaching amendments to legislation works. In that case what she is saying is that it shouldn't be that way. In a perfect world I would agree. But being able to function or even survive in our present system is a very different thing. If she and others are able to crack the system without losing the battle liberal and progressive Democrats fight for then more power to her.

It's a game. I hate the game. The game should die. But negotiation with extreme ideologies who have just as much intent as we do makes a game out of it. I hope she wins.

If you still believe in trickle down economics, and fund your campaigns from corporations that want you to promote that, at least admit it and stop pretending that you are "moderate". But when this conservative minority has a strangle hold on the majority of Democrats, something is wrong.

I wonder how the Sanders haters will react to this. She is a Democrat, officially, so does she get to criticize things in her own party?

For some I guess the party is perfect and just can't be improved upon or evolve. That or "this is not the right time" mantra takes effect, like Republicans with gun control. Which basically amounts to the same state of paralysis.
