A high school classmate was ranting on FB about low dairy prices he is getting. I posted this and ..

now I am getting a lot of negative feedback

You Republicans cut SNAP aka food stamps and a lot working people just can't afford it. Reducing of a large part of the milk market so the mostly republican farmers cut off their nose to spite their face. I can sympathize, but market forces will prevail.

Was I wrong?

Dairy farmers have been suffering for decades. Some, maybe even most voted for Trump, but it's not all a Republican thing. My practically socialist uncle was a dairy farmer and he struggled his entire life to make it.

He told farmers to "Plant fencerow to fencerow" and that ended supply management, which the U.S. used to use to stabilize nmarkets and profits.

A lot of people don’t realize that the food stamp program in under Dept of Ag, not HHS. It’s original emphasis was to help farmers sell basic commodities, like milk, while also helping lower income citizens.

When I hear the locals complaining about "those people" on food stamps I always tell them what you mentioned above about helping farmers. They don't believe me so I just tell them to look it up.

I also like to say this - the Farm Bill is Socialism on Steroids

and I haven't studied the effects of SNAP on milk prices but I'd stick with; 1) I hear the economy is best in the history of the USA. Am I wrong? and 2) Isn't it great how we don't need all those nasty regulations artificially inflating prices! Just my $.02

I don’t think any of the SNAP cuts went through, nor would that have much impact.

But “market forces will prevail” is something they have to live with. Who could he be angry with? Should government implement some policy to raise prices?

Just bought three gallons of milk for just $1.12 - so things aren’t getting any better for him. But the benefit to consumers is substantial

In any case, I am sure there are plenty of working class people with children who wish they could afford another gallon or two a month.

Of course there are people that wish they could afford more milk... but that doesn’t help your argument because there are unquestionably fewer of them than two years ago (with fewer unemployed, higher incomes, and cheaper milk)

So in order to take a jab at him getting what he deserves, it’s best to just blame the free markets that he champions.

Maybe ask him how much the producers in Canada are getting?

He should not complain about cutting SNAP which returns things to natural invisible hand market forces, and that was what he wanted, right? No artificial gubmint interference. So he will just have to work harder or sell something the market rewards more.
