This story won't have a happy ending. Did it ever occur to him those women were there against their will? I am ambivalent about prostitution. I am not ambivalent about taking advantage of women brought to America under false pretenses and forced into sex work against their will.
Lock him up.

(99,710 posts)There are some guys at my gym who talk about going to Thailand, the Philippines, and Mexico and hiring prostitutes. The whole idea of going to foreign countries to buy sex from poor women makes me want to puke.
My thoughts on prostitution where men and women voluntarily enter into it, free from coercion or economic necessity, are more nuanced.

(70,089 posts)i suspect that for most guys, esp those that go to such lengths, it is exactly the powerlessness of the women that gets them off.
always felt that women's bodies arent really theirs if they cant sell them. sell them freely, fine.
all the other ways it usually happens- not so much.

(7,277 posts)well regulated and widely accepted but legalisation did not solve the problem of sex trafficking as expected. Nothing much changed one way or another.

(14,741 posts)epstein specialized in underage woman. The spas don't. There may still be trafficking, but it doesn't involve underage woman, at least not in the us. Look at the arrest pictures of the woman at these spas. They are typically middle aged. They are not girls.

(32,634 posts)According to this article
https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/national/new-england-patriots-owner-robert-kraft-charged-as-a-john-in-human-trafficking-prostitution-investigation
and this one
https://www.wptv.com/165-men-charged-with-solicitation-of-prostitution-in-indian-river-county
... the women involved are mostly Asians employed by these "Day Spas" and the customers were men looking for extracurriculars. I'm not sure how the trafficking charges come in, unless some of the women were brought into the country illegally and against their will. It looks like Robert Kraft got caught in the sting along with a lot of other men.

(19,060 posts)Calling these places funny names diminishes the victims of human trafficking who are being forced to work at these places as sex slaves.
Going to one of these places is sick! By paying money for this the men who go to these places are helping fund human trafficking, they're contributing money to the kidnapping, rape, and slavery of countless girls, most of them under aged.

(3,557 posts)A friend that Ive recently made used to be a prostitute when she was younger - and she has some interesting insights and stories to tell. Anyways, she was a 20 year old single mom and she got into prostitution on her own free will. For her, it provided a very flexible schedule and she only had to work minimal hours a month to do quite well for herself.
She could work 40+ hours a week at minimum wage somewhere and get $5.25 an hour back in the late 90s (which Im not even sure if it was that high) and bring home $210 before taxes and stuff or she could go out and earn $200+ for 1 hour as a prostitute. The choice was very easy for her.
Anyways, Im not quite sure how what I wrote is relevant to the thread....

(14,565 posts)The Colts owner Jim Irsay was suspended for 6 games and fined a half million due to a drug arrest a few years ago.
The key term is "personal conduct policy," and whether or not Kraft violated it. Hard to imagine he didn't violate it, but they can define it any way they want.
This ruins Kraft for the Hall of Fame next year. They have been inducting one or two coaches/owners/personnel types per year recently. Kraft was the frontrunner for one of those spots next year. Now he becomes a laughingstock.

He said no not really, he was there for monkey business. We thought about it for a second or two and simultaneously leaned back I'm sure with the same look on our faces and took our leave.
What is wrong with these old fucks?

(14,490 posts)Most likely, many of us here regularly do business or buy products where human trafficking was involved in producing the product or service.
Ask yourself....
* Do you buy seafood, either in a restaurant or grocery store?
* Do you ever go to a nail salon?
* Do you ever eat at Mexican, Chinese, Korean or other foreign-themed restaurants?
* Do you ever rent a hotel or motel room?
(I won't even get into the meat and produce markets)
If we answer "yes" to any of those, there's a good probability trafficked labor was involved somewhere in the process of providing you that service.

(14,490 posts)Your point is well taken, but I was primarily attempting to point out that human trafficking is far more wide-spread in the US than most citizens are aware of. Whether it involves sex or seafood, it's wrong and those that organize it and profit from it should be in jail, IMO.
Not to mention that those that have been commandeered very rarely get the fair labor considerations we're accustomed to such as healthcare, social security and workplace safety protections.
Horror stories about about death and injury in meat processing plants and on fishing boats (for example) abound, but rarely are seen on main-stream news. Many of those deaths and injuries are simply swept under the rug and are not even reported.
We might ask ourselves then, why it takes an event involving a high-profile person for this wide-spread issue to get attention.

(37,449 posts)These unlicensed spa's, wonder where Trump is with these. Where is ICE? The majority of the enforcement comes from local police agencies. The operator usually rents a place to house her people. They take their passports away, and threaten them (or their families) if they don't work. A common tactic is telling them they have to work off their passage to the US. Its not uncommon to see two of more places move in. Getting the evidence is sometimes a matter of acrobatics. Usually someone whispers about the time they had. In NY State a license is need for a masseuse to work. They use the word spa, which can imply a number of things.
Some nail salons also employ a number of Asians, they come in by a van and leave by a van. Mostly women
Any use of the title "massage therapist" or "masseuse," "masseur," or any derivation of the title, within New York State, requires licensure as a massage therapist.
