about a FUCKING COAST GUARD OFFICER who was planning massive terrorist attacks against our government and our free press?
They've been doing the fucking same thing for the past fucking week. Promoting one while downplaying the other.
I swear, watching Donnie Shit for Brains and our fucking media is like watching a group of dogs running around sniffing each others asses

(32,061 posts)Still sniffing this morning, too. It's ridiculous. The Toady Show led off with the Smollett thing AGAIN. Gave it top billing. AGAIN. Spent five minutes on it. AGAIN. The NC election got about a minute. Roger stone got 45 seconds. The weather, a minute. Not a peep about the Coast Guard Nazi, who got a whole minute yesterday. I switched to ABC. At least the weather got top billing there. It's fucking ridiculous.

(13,798 posts)Turned on the TV yesterday mid-afternoon to see what was up with Stone's court appearance. Went to CNN first when MSNBC was on commercial break -- nothing but Smollet. Went back to MSNBC a couple minutes later, watched their next segment which was 100% Mueller report, back to CNN during commercial break -- still frigging all about Smollet!!!

(13,798 posts)few liberal commentators a few hours a day on national TV people seem forget who the real company owning the network is. MSNBC (Rachel, Chris, Joy, etc.) is owned and controlled by media giant Comcast. Literally, some can't see the big picture.

(12,145 posts)I think what the media is doing is calling attention to the fact that trump and his gang are all over the Smollett story and ignoring the fucking coast guard officer story.
KPN
(15,587 posts)Smollet was the big story, the pending Mueller report next, followed I'd say by Stone's court appearance, and then the coast guard officer lumped in with all the other stuff.

(1,588 posts)Is our Coast Guard full of terrorists under his command waiting to be let loose upon America? Is there a deep state alt right militia being formed??? How did this happen? The guy has been in the service for years!!! This demands an investigation!!!

(15,192 posts)can I please tell you that you have a 99.9% chance of making Lieutenant.
LT is an O3 in the Navy and Coast Guard. It's equivalent to Captain in the Army, Marine Corp or Air Force.
Promotion to O3 in the military is pretty-much automatic
Do two years Time-in-Rank as an O1, you automatically get promoted to O2.
Do two years Time-in-Rank as an O2, you automatically get promoted to O3.
In fact, for the Navy when I was in. My promotion rate to LCDR O4 was 85%. That meant that 85% of those that were eligible to be promoted to LCDR got promoted to LCDR.
We used to joke that you "had to try really hard to NOT make O4".
Provided you weren't a complete dirtbag, hadn't killed anyone or wrecked anything, hadn't been formally disciplined for something and had a pulse, you were going to make LCDR.
As you move up in the ranks, the promotions get quite a bit harder. By the time you get to where you are eligible for O5 or O6, it gets to the point that if you aren't promoted, you are forced to retire.

(1,588 posts)could they? I've worked with really "outspoken" people, and word gets around between coworkers what kind of people they are and jokes told about them. Management knew about them and their prejudices. They were on the lookout to correct any bad behavior. I just couldn't imaging this guy, jacked up on 'roids getting by for so long. There has got to be others there.

(15,192 posts)The military promotion system is probably one of the most non-discriminatory, equal advancement systems that there is, up to the higher ranks.
It's not perfect. As with all of these types of systems, some folks that should never fucking wear a uniform, like Steve Bannon, will get promoted to LT/O3, while great and dedicated folks, like my first LPO will get "passed-over".
Had a frickin' Navy Fighter Pilot I worked with that was on the "fast-track", until it was discovered that he had two wives in two different states.
Bottom line, unless it was impacting the way he was doing his job, this type of behavior is easy to hide. Usually, we would find out about other "shaky" shit folks had done AFTER they got in trouble for something else.
My only question would be why this was never discovered during a Security Clearance investigation.
Of course, depending on what the guys job was, he may not have needed the scrutiny required of a TS, or TS-SCI Clearance.
For Secret or Confidential Clearances, it usually only required a clear "local records check" and no red-flags on their SF86.

(45,261 posts)They had LGBT policies years ago and several non-white captains and admirals. They deliberately recruit from the communities they serve. The Commandant essentially told Trump to go F himself and they are not going to throw out transgender servicepeople.
This one terrorist asshole doesn't represent the Coast Guard at all. And he probably failed at his job. I agree that background investigations should do a better job of finding white supremacist activity because these people are dangerous.
