(16,829 posts)There was a Russian immigrant in my city who owned a St. Bernard. During the winter he would allow the dog to hang out in the snow in his front yard. The dog just hung out and didn't wander, didn't bark. He was made for this.
Somebody called the police on him for abusing the dog. The police came to his front door and totally freaked the guy out because he couldn't understand why they were there.
Some dogs want to be left outside in the cold.

(11,584 posts)We have several LGDs they are Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd... they are working dogs who guard the dairy goats from predators... try to bring them into the house overnight even in subzero temps and they will turn the door into splinters to get out. Of course they have a barn with a lot of hay to bed down in where they sleep whenever they want, but they are nocturnal so most nights they will be out in the wind and rain and snow on the job.

I just did it, she was out there sleeping in 45 degree temps (I have her under a blanket too anyway)

(3,012 posts)what that is anymore. I have to beg my dog to come in when its single digits and subzero temps after I let her out to do her business. This has been going on for months. I would never get her inside if it was 45!

(63,221 posts)This makes me so angry to see these poor animals chained up outside in the cold. Dogs should be inside with their families where they can be loved and taken care of. I can't even say what I think of these owners.

(3,138 posts)If it's breed that handles cold its important for the dog to be out. I have a Great Pyrenees, even at 20 degrees he is quite comfortable, double coat of fur. There are many breeds like this.

(9,364 posts)Yes, some can take and even love cold weather. But some don't do well in it. The dogs that were rescued in this video clearly were not doing well in that bitter cold.

(11,686 posts)There are dogs who like to stay out or must ( working. ) The main thing is to make sure there is a warm dry place that is shielded from wind and rain/snow. Water must be checked regularly to make sure it is not frozen and food put where it is covered also. Remember the kitties too.

pissed the hell out of me to hear their dog barking in freezing weather, wanting to be let back inside.
cops came out every time.
i remember one night they came out, couldn't hear or see the dog and left. awhile later i called them back. they came out again. the dog was scared and hiding when they showed up the first time. i might have had to call a third time that night. (i'm sure i posted about it here)
one time the excuse was that they let the dog out and then they fell asleep. (which probably happened but why the fuck wouldn't you get your dog inside before you went to lay down? it was freezing cold!)
anyway, the cops were always great about coming out and rescuing this suburban dog from the stupidity the dog's family seemed to suffer from.

(37,648 posts)As long as they put a shelter there, animal control won't do anything. It also takes them days to respond because of hte great need.

(51,277 posts)Sled dogs in Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and other Northern places are out in much colder weather and love it. My Samoyeds would ignore their heated dog house and curl up, tail over nose, and get buried in the snow.
