um Jared? Maybe you should re-think your unholy alliance with Saudi ruling family.

(62,444 posts)Obviously Agnew knew his audience.
Am I supposed to be surprised that the Saudis arent fond of Jews?
Or am I supposed to be surprised that Agnew wanted to get money out of them?
That segment left me with an overwhelming feeling of so what?
Did Agnew accomplish anything of significance with that money? That might have made it more interesting, but it seems to me that Agnew did not eliminate Jews in the US as an upshot of whatever he was seeking to get money out of the Saudis for.
Seems to me that he developed a clever way to wheedle some cash out of the Saudis.

(31,261 posts)Some Jewish politicians in this country loomed large at that same time. I prefer to think about the good things those politicians stood for and did, not focus on a corrupt man like Agnew. The fact that he did not remotely succeed is a tribute to the power of our political and social systems, they are not perfect, but they are superior to most.
What the relegation does, I hope, is sink Netanyahu's reelection bid. With him kissing up to the Saudis, information like this is important to Israeli voters.

(62,444 posts)Figure....
If you didnt know Agnew was an anti-Semite, then he wasnt doing a very good job of BEING one for all of that money he received.
If you were trying to get millions of dollars out of the Saudis, youd tell them you intended to use that money to promote Jewish interests?
The letter is so over the top that it strikes me more as an example of knowing his audience. Apart from the letter, what did he actually do?

No doubt Nixon was an anti-semite, but his defenders always pointed to the prominence of Kissinger in Nixon's admin to pretend he wasn't. Nixon was the kind of anti-semite who'd wink and nod his support to open nazi types, and keep his hands clean. He'd whisper "I'm with you" to them, he wouldn't bellow it out like G. L. Rockwell. We only knew about his constant anti-semitic slur spewing because the Watergate tapes came out. He wanted the antisemitic nazis' support, but kept his desire for their support on the down low, to be able to get broader more mainstream support for himself.
Here's what Agnew actually DID do, apart from the letter:
"... In 1976 he published a novel, The Canfield Decision, about an American vice president's troubled relationship with his president. The book received mixed reviews, but was commercially successful, with Agnew receiving $100,000 for serialization rights alone.[182] The book landed Agnew in controversy; his fictional counterpart, George Canfield, refers to "Jewish cabals and Zionist lobbies" and their hold over the American media, a charge which Agnew, while on a book tour, asserted was true in real life.[183] This brought complaints from Seymour Graubard, of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, and a rebuke from President Ford, then campaigning for re-election.[184] "

(62,444 posts)The Arab oil embargo was for a reason.
What, specifically, did Agnew do for the Saudis?
If you were writing a letter to get money from the royal family of Sweden, do you think you might mention how much you like saunas?

(31,261 posts)We have a issue with it too, but not remotely as bad as republicans do. Good people must unite and turn back racists and anti-Semites until the vanish from our country, whether it be in the light and undercover.

(12,153 posts)collector Gregg Schneider got hold of the letters, so I asked Google.
Schneider bought them from Agnew's heirs.
