After the bear broke into the car, it likely released the parking brake somehow, he said.
The couple didnt see the bear leave the SUV and called 911 after the crash because they didnt know if people were to blame and possibly still in the vehicle.
The car rolled backward from a neighbors home into Cornelius mailbox and over some utility boxes, he said.
La Plata County Sheriffs Office deputies determined a bear was to blame, because it defecated in the car, likely because it was nervous, Cornelius said.
It also ripped up the interior of the vehicle. It pulled the steering wheel straight off the shaft, ripped the radio out of the dash and busted out the back window.

(22,912 posts)And no there is no punch line. We did. Must have smelled a discarded food wrapper. Around here (The Catskills) hey know how to open certain door handles if left unlocked. Dusty bear prints on the seat and door. Door left wide open upon exit. A bunch of our CDs scattered on the driveway.
We deduced it didn't like our taste in music. Now we always lock our car doors when the bears are out of hibernation

(23,312 posts)Sometimes they dont go to sleep if food sources are readily available and even if they do, bears will have a walkabout and go back to bed. I take my bird feeders in at night because bears are hell on them.

(1,207 posts)NC. They don't go to sleep all winter- you can still see them every now and then when they get up and walk around.
But, early Spring, when they are hungry and have cubs with them is when they are most likely to break into cars and try to get into the garbage, bird feeders, etc.

(8,419 posts)They actually know which cars to break into. Specifics minivans and hatchbacks were targets. The bears knew which latches were weak and targeted those cars and vans.
