Trump's Presidency Is Getting Weaker

A defeat for the president’s “Space Force” proposal was typical – and telling.

By Jonathan Bernstein February 21, 2019, 5:37 AM CST

This week offered two prime examples of why Donald Trump’s presidency has been weaker than most people realize.

First: “Although President Donald Trump tweeted that he had ordered his administration to cut off disaster aid to wildfire victims in California, federal officials confirmed on Wednesday that they never received any such directive.” Political scientist Brendan Nyhan gets it right: “Weakest president in contemporary times. ‘Ordered’ likely means he said something to a staff member who ignored him.”

Second: “Bowing to bipartisan concerns in Congress, President Trump retreated Tuesday from his plan to create an independent ‘space force’ in the Pentagon, proposing instead to consolidate the military’s space operations and personnel in the Air Force.” Kevin Drum at Mother Jones explains: “So now it’s just a branch of the Air Force, which is more-or-less what it already is since the Air Force Space Command already exists. It’s just going to get a little bigger now.”

And the Republicans will very soon have to reject him completely or their Party will be completely destroyed for years to come, and they know it.

He's a loser. His ideas are losers. His behavior is loser lousy. He is a sad case. Sadder yet, he's the best the republicans have to offer as a role model of what degenerate republican values actually leads to.

They inform everything he does. He says really stupid things ALL the time. Space Force was incredibly stupid to anyone who knew that there was already a branch of the military that deals with space, the youngest of the 4 major military services, the US Air Force. There has been no new military branch created in the US since the Air Force was created as a separate branch in 1947. If Trump understood anything about US history he would have known not to say such a stupid thing, but again, he is ignorant and his arrogance about "knowing better than anyone" sets him up to do those stupid things over and over again.

He lies because he wants to be perceived as strong, so he basically tells his supporters (for whom the tweets are made) that he ordered aid to be cut. It is like when as children we bragged to our friends, "then I told Johnny, if he didn't give me back my ball, I was going to beat him up, and he gave me my ball back". When in reality we might have given Johnny our lunch money to get the ball back. It is arrogance and again ignorance of how the processes of government work. Trump had to sound tough but didn't know and likely didn't care about how any order would actually look and how it would be recorded in the records, as all governmental acts usually are.

He is weak to everyone except his ardent supporters who so desperately want a White Christian savior, that they are willing to overlook that they are dealing with a con man.
