But I will never forget how devastated I was hearing the news of his death - sitting in the car outside my parents’ house, and my dear mother had just gotten a terminal-cancer diagnosis - it was one of those moments you’ll never forget. 13. I wept when he died.

The first time I heard a Nirvana song on the radio (1991), I realized he sounded exactly the way I felt. I didn't know the lyrics yet, but his voice perfectly expressed my rage and pain.

As I had just been released from a psychiatric hospital where I'd self-admitted for Major Depressive Disorder and suicidal ideation, his committing suicide later should not have come as a surprise to me but I've always been so sad that I made it out of the darkness, and he did not.
