2. I think the OP may not have English as a first language...

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong, Diclotican) that they're French-Canadian.

Edit: I'll correct myself. Looking back, I see that Diclotican has indicated they're from Norway.

by giving them the correct spelling.

7. Yeah. My apologies...

I don't know why I thought you were French-Canadian.

I'm glad you're here, though. I think opinions from international posters are important.

Don't worry, it is not the worst thing I have been told I'm here on DU:p

Ironic. I'm still here - but they are tomb stoned long time ago...

DU was one of the few sane places out there when Jr was in office.. And it was one of the few places you could getting real information about things.. And DU have really made it to higher levels as time goes by - and I suspect it to be the "best" site to get information - from a more liberal way of thinking in the US this days..

6. The rumor I have heard about prisons in Norway

is that they are the cushiest in the world.

Not that prison should be all about punishment. In my opinion, it should be about protecting the public, and rehabilitation. Okay fine, but can someone like Breivik ever be "rehabilitated"? I mean, what kind of miracle would it take to turn him into a good citizen?

9. Just because criminals are cruel and uncaring

doesn't mean that we have to be. Rehabilitate those that want to be rehabilitated, lock away the rest of them to keep us safe.

I suspect that prisons that are safer for the inmates are safer for the guards and the rest of society. Most people in prison get out eventually.

10. It's still prison and you can't leave.

Some countries don't subscribe to the uniquely American notion that the more medieval a prison is, the better it is.

I suspect Breivik will spend most of the rest of his life confined. As well he should.

I don't know how good it to be in a prison in Norway, as I have never really been in a prison - the only time I have "been on the inside" was when I was there to repair something who needed to be repaired.. But compared to much of the world, I suspect our prison system to be "comfortable" and in many cases more like a Holiday for many who might else experienced horrible condidtions...

The principle behind our prison system is to rehabilitate the people inside.. It might look luxurious compared to what you in the US might experience but it IS a prison, who they have to obey the guards and follow the routines - anyone who doesn't do it, might experience that the prison is not that like a Holiday anyway... And I can not memory the last time our prisons had revolt on their hand, because the guards was outflanked.. Compared to the US, who prisons burn every now and then, our prison system is rather quiet and nice...

I doubt that Breivik, or someone like him is able to be rehabilitated in our lifetime.. What he did, was something that our court system are just not made for.. One or two murders is problematic enough, but over 80 killed.. That is many... But I also suspect that he will be kept in a prison cell for as long as it is necessary - aka the rest of his natural life.. Mostly because he IS a danger to everyone, also to himself.. And as he himself have stated - he would have being doing it again if he ever got the Chance to do it.. That it inself is reason enough to keep hem in a prison as long as human possible.. And Breivik will be some of a hot potato for the government when/if he ever was to get his freedom.. I doubt any Justice Minister in Norway, would dear to give him freedom.. Then the whole cabinet with the Prime Minister will be asked to step down by our Parliament..

18. Yes, if anyone should be locked up for life without parole, it is Breivik.

I remember reading that a life sentence is unheard of in Norway, but I think it would be a good idea to make an exception in his case.

Mr Breivik can not be given a harsher, or stricter penalty, that is on the books - and in Norway, it is just 21 years behind bars. But he can, and should be given more time, as the laws give us the possibility to hold a person, who is deemed to be a danger to himself- or ot others behind bars as long as he is seen as a danger. Of course, with a review every 5 year or so..

We have no life without parole in Norway - but as pointed out, he can be kept under lock and key, for as long as he is a danger to himself, or to others - and he will be kept under lock and key, for a long time.. Even in prison, he would be kept segregates, at least to he is not in danger from the other inmates - who clearly pointed out, when he was arrested, that they wanted to do "something" with it.. And I doubt the inmates joke about THAT...

When it come to the issue of stricter laws in Norway - I think our parliament, and our Justice system have to find out how to deal with the possibility of others out there as Breivik... It will take some time find it out... And for some reason I think sometimes it is the best, that our parliament sometimes work with the level of the last Ice age Then we dosen't wil be given some "patriot act" who is rushed true the system...

8. Michael Moore visited Norway for Sicko

He put this in the extra scenes on his DVD.
What a wonderful country and a beautiful people! The right has to scream about Cuba and NKorea as "Socialist" because they are afraid to mention countries like Norway.

If I'm not wrong - he doesn't want to put in in the film - as most americans would say bloody lie....

It is Okay to tell americans about N.Korea and Cuba - but to tell about Norway - who by the way is far more capitalistic than I like it to be... I think at the moment the "State" own 40 percent of the values in Norway - 60 percent is on private hands".. But the State in Norway own a lot of land - and also have control directly, or indirectly over much of the bank sector - and in the Oil sector, where Norway in principle OWN the oil, but where international and national oil companies work together to split the profit..

That would be a thing to much to tell the regular Joe out there...
