Their minds are closed. Their egos are all twisted with their religious cult in a belief system of "spiritual materialism." Spiritual materialism is about using religion to expand, enhance, and solidify one's own ego as being real, important, and eternal. Unfortunately, it seems that the only thing that breaks the grip of evangelical thinking is a big painful shock to the system, like death, disease, or some great personal tragedy and misfortune. Only then does that person begin to question why their god didn't protect them.
