COVINGTON, Ky. - Marking the largest settlement yet in the Roman Catholic Church's sexual abuse crisis, the Covington Diocese said yesterday that it had agreed to pay up to $120 million to alleged victims of child molestation.

The amount, which must be approved by the Boone County Circuit Court, would eclipse a $100 million settlement reached by the Orange County, Calif., diocese last year involving 90 victims, and an $85 million settlement reached two years ago with 552 victims by the Boston Archdiocese, where the scandal erupted in 2002.

The announcement came after more than a year of negotiations after the filing of a class-action suit against the Covington Diocese in February 2003 on behalf of more than 100 alleged victims. The suit said the diocese had covered up the abuse over a 50-year period.

It is not just the south, so stfu with your region bashing. California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Illinois, - all these states and others have these incidents regularly and are posted here. Where were your comments about those states?

Kentucky was not in the confederacy, btw.

KY may not have declared itself a Confederate state but it was a slave state where slavery didn't die easily. It took KY until 1976 to ratify the 13th amendment. The KKK was quite active in KY after the war and still is.

I am from TN and I grew up in TN and KY. I still regularly visit my family there. I am sad to say the attitudes outside metropolitan cities are very much the same as they were in the 50s and 60s and when I left in the 90s. I still hear the n-word used and I still see segregation.

I do not live and have not lived in all the states you mention other than Oregon. I very regularly bash Oregon outside of Portland and Salem as backwards and racists because it is. I bash Oregon east of the Cascades as little more than Idaho.

I bash the South because it is overwhelmingly stupid and backwards. I know this from living there. I will continue to bash the South and eastern Oregon because I know them on a personal basis.

Someone should investigate because this school is turning out sociopaths. Does anyone live in this area? What is it like? I occasionally have to fly into the Cinci/Northern Kentucky Airport in Covington (CVG) for work and the people have always seemed nice, but what the hell is going on here?

Or even the parents who would send their kids there, although some of them don’t seem to have taught their kids decency. I think right-wing hate radio and TV and 4chan bear some responsibility too. And the kids themselves are WAY old enough to know better.
