How Nancy Pelosi signaled the end of Donald Trump's easy ride

In one deft performance the top Democrat in the House owned the president, having faced down Republicans’ scare tactics and attacks from her own side

Nancy Pelosi was perched on the end of a sofa in the Oval Office when the balance of power in Donald Trump’s Washington decisively shifted in her favour.

The event in early December began as a simple photo call with Trump – the first attempt at bipartisan dialogue after the midterm elections saw Democrats take back control of the House of Representatives.

The president was in domineering form, making demands about funding for his stalled border wall and contemplating shutting down the government if a budget was not passed giving him $5bn for his unfulfilled promise.

“I think the American people recognise that we must keep government open, that a shutdown is not worth anything,” said Pelosi as Trump nodded. “And that we should not have a Trump shutdown.”

The president looked up and said: “A what? Did you say a Trump – ?”

because the republican Draft-Dodger-in-Chief brought this stupidity upon America, along with his stupid cascading economic FAIL: the #TrumpSlump.

republicans and russians are to blame for installing a Casino-hustling republican draft dodger in the oval office.

But THIS is why she’s now positioned exactly where she is. And should be. Seriously, was there ANY doubt? Even the remotest? Perhaps those who did weren’t completely aware, or had forgotten, or weren’t paying attention, or were too young (folks like AOC excepted).

I hope the doubters and naysayers and short-sighted change-for-the-sake-of-mere-change’ers have seen enough by now. I hope they’ve come to their senses. I hope they’ve finally realized that Nancy Pelosi is supposed to be Speaker of the House.

Nancy Pelosi has certainly earned the right to be Speaker of the House.

Nancy Pelosi deserves to be Speaker of the House.

Nancy Pelosi should be Speaker of the House.

And at this point, Nancy Pelosi MUST be Speaker of the House.

She WILL be well-positioned. After all, the Speaker of the House is second in line to the presidency, after only ONE other person: the Vice President.

I think, be patient, just wait for Nancy. Whatever moves she makes in the
very near future will be telling. They are old white-haired men in our
Democratic party who do not want a woman POTUS.

I was pissed at her years ago when she would not pursue impeachment
of Bush. She said we did not have enough votes, waste of time.

Now she is my hero (what's feminine for hero that does not sound like
a drug?).

I adore Nancy and as a Vietnam veteran (stupid war) she makes me
proud that I served.

Taking impeachment off the table. But she’s the best vote-counter on two legs. So if she didn’t think she had the votes, well, point taken. Under protest and with objection, but still reluctantly taken.

Other than that, she’s pretty doggone sterling.

He doubled down not realizing he was expected to. Why else would Pelosi and Schumer poke at him with a stick? He fell right into a trap and it snapped shut so fast and hard that we could hear the echo. It was obvious the way Pelosi and Schumer were exchanging glances, and kept turning to the media to speak over Trump.
