Not Senators or Congressmen.
Not the President or the Cabinet Secretaries
Not even the folks who are 'furloughed'
It's the gov't sub-contractors who suddenly can't make payroll or pay their bills.
The restaurants and coffee shops who see their business dwindle to nothingness.
It's all the folks who provide service and goods to the thousands of gov't employees.
It's the souvenir shops and hotels at the National Parks when the parks close.
Those folks will NEVER recoup, even if the 'furloughed' folks get their back pay.
All for a fucking 'wall' that nobody wants.

(657 posts)They sure as hell get hurt if they miss a paycheck, even if they are paid later.
Try telling your mortgage lender or credit card company that you'll pay them when furlough is over. And it's furlough, not "furlough."
I am retired from the federal government and I am disgusted with the digs taken at federal employees.

(4,033 posts)Of course they are hurt by not getting a paycheck. And yes its not always productive to try and work with people you owe money to. I should have put them in a separate category. I apologize. The rank and file gov't employees whether Federal, State, or Local are the ones who keep this country running and anyone who doesn't understand that needs to go back to school and retake Civics 101.
The point I was trying to make is that there are thousands and thousands of folks out there who are not gov't employees who will never get reimbursed for lost income.

(657 posts)employees go through during furloughs.
But I am done with your baiting and I'm out of this conversation.

(4,033 posts)It doesn't make up for your missing paycheck. Not by a long shot.
In Virginia, where I suspect a lot of US Gov't employees live, the max benefit is $378/wk. Which works out to a little less than $20,000/yr. I suspect that is significantly less than what the earn while working.

Manufacturing in the auto industry for independent suppliers is a very large part of Michigan's employment. It is not at all uncommon for people to have short term layoffs now and then and people are used to it happening. People deal with it all the time with private employers.
You would think that people getting laid off for a couple weeks or so due to the shoutdown was somehow unprecedented just because it happens to government employees this time.
At least in this case they will most likely get back pay anyway once it ends. That is never the case for anyone working for the private sector.

(11,917 posts)Furloughed federal employees will still receive unemployment checks the same as anyone else who happens to be laid off from their job for a short period of time. Maybe they are unheard of in DC, but short term layoffs are common in many industries across the country. I have personally worked in auto supplier manufacturing plants where people were volunteering for short term layoffs.
They most likely will receive back pay once the shutdown is ended ( they nearly always do). Of course if that happens they will need to pay back any unemployment benefits (so not to be paid twice)
Is it an ideal situation? No, but under that scenario, they will have suffered zero loss of income. Claiming they will be getting no income is misleading.
