(2,117 posts)And youre satisfied with a statement from months ago? You realize Trump is getting ready to make this shitty deal right? This is a prime opportunity for democrats to show themselves as being for the working class. NAFTA destroyed whole communities and many people blame Bill Clinton and the Democrats, rightly or not, and here we have a chance to stand up and youre satisfied with one statement from months ago?

Elizabeth Warren blasts Nafta 2.0 | Trump ally in House has plan to fight Democrats probes

Then there was this statement made on November 12:

The article from the NYT on Nov. 12 also includes more commentary from Nancy Pelosi.

The author of this OP is trying to give the impression that Bernie was out front of everyone else opposing a new treaty while the reality is that Democrats have expressed concerns for months. I believe that I addressed your initial question adequately, but there are plenty of articles on the Internet from August through November that indicate that Democrats will not rubber-stamp the treaty.
Do you also know that once President Trump provides written notice to Congress that we are formally withdrawing from NAFTA that Congress will have 90 days to pass a replacement? If Congress fails to ratify a new treaty agreement, then both NAFTA and the new bill will not be in effect which will have significant repercussions to all three countries in the agreement.
Then there is the fact that the new treaty also has enforcement provisions against LGBT discrimination which Republicans oppose.
I answered your original question politely in my prior response, but you moved the goalposts by requesting more recent articles which I provided above. It's also unfortunate that a lot of jobs were lost in the 25 years since NAFTA was ratified, but other jobs were created. The facts are that nobody gets everything that they want in a negotiation. While the renegotiated treaty isn't perfect, the alternative is that no agreement is in place and a new round of economic turmoil would be the result.

(2,117 posts)someone killed your best friend but the cops arent really taking any action. How often would you speak up about it? Would you make one brief statement and move on? Wellll I did make one statement months ago, I guess my job is done!
You keep harping on it like a broken fucking record so that the people start paying attention to what is happening and they can see that you are the good guys and that you are at least fighting and speaking for the powerless. Thats how you start a movement and enact change and get votes and support. My god I thought this was common sense

(67,782 posts)You were told that Pelosi began addressing this months ago. Last I saw Pelosi IS the Democratic leadership.
Do you really think she made that statement in August and just let it go?
I'm sure she's "harping on it like a broken fucking record" (your words) over and over again and working on it. The difference is that she doesn't feel the need to make public statements every few days to proclaim something like "see what I did today?" She just plugs along, interested in results, not merely headlines.

(2,117 posts)in the last election and NAFTA is a very big deal there... you know how many people there are still on Trade Adjustment Assistance? I challenge you to look it up. Communities were decimated. And wrongly or rightly a lot of people there blame democrats for that. Its about PERCEPTION as Trump and the republicans have proven.
Your lackadaisical view on this is quite common. Its systemic and needs to change.
George II
(67,782 posts)....you were told, and now it's something else two steps off topic.
I don't have what you call a "lackadaisical view", but I'm certainly not going to do daily updates of what Nancy Pelosi is doing on the issue, and I doubt she'll be doing routine updates, either. As I said before, she's interested in getting results, not headlines. I wish all legislators were like her.
We have too many politicians mugging for the cameras, conducting seminars, etc., instead of doing their jobs.

(32,640 posts)Your analogy is confusing, tho...
Is the person harping on it "like a broken fucking record" the politician or one person that it happened to that's trying to start a movement?
And you analogy doesn't really present a situation where a whole lot of people are directly affected or are horrified seeing it in the media, like what happens with most movements that occur. Unless your "friend" in the analogy is a beloved public figure, then your analogy really doesn't map to what spurs actual movements.
And you may also be missing the common sense differences between a movement and a campaign. Or maybe it's, as you put it, a common lackadasical view concerning what is and isn't a movement.

(31,261 posts)What I would like to see from Bernie is a plan for reaching those end goals and maintaining trade relations with our neighbors.
A plan could be that labor rates and environmental protections among the three countries must be equal in seven years (to throw out a timeframe). That would prevent companies from moving to a low wage country that allows the environment to be savaged. Such a plan can be put in place for every country that we trade with.
Trump is really mucking up trade issues, but we won't bring about needed change unless we have workable plans.

(54,506 posts)Unwritten rule number one: If Bernie Sanders says it, it is a revelation, and has never been said before. Bernie says water is wet? OMG, he's right, why have the Democrats not been on this before?
Unwritten rule number two: if you have a different point of view, it is your point of view that "needs" to change, and never the attitude of the one telling you that you need to change it.
It is an (apparently inconvenient) truth that Sanders is not always right, not always wrong, and not always the first to point something out. The Republicans look silly enough with their deification of Reagan. I see no pressing need for something similar on our side.

(58,785 posts)I'd advise not bothering to discuss with people who must oppose the party's big working mainstream alliance. After all, splinter groups whose reason for existence is dissidence must maintain belief in their superior virtues no matter what or lose their identity. It's the same for the tea partiers on the right.
