Today, the central american refugees are requesting asylum, which

Yet dumb$hit IQ45 would only take you, if you can get an O-1 or
TN visa and work for Hair-Gropenfuhrer at Mar-A-Lago.

(32,356 posts)... became some of our very best American citizens. Their children and grandchildren are now the backbone of our society and our economy. The immigrants of the 1950s have given so much back to us, and we had no trouble making room for them when they came here. The USA is better and stronger now because of our unselfish sharing that was done 70 years ago. It's a lesson we cannot forget.

(11,535 posts)His father was a boy, but remembered it vividly. They had been prosperous, but not rich, before the war, owing 3 bakeries. After the war ended, they were destitute and homeless, wandering Europe, mostly on foot, for 7 years. They slept rough, or in cabins where shepherds slept during grazing season in the highlands. Work was impossible to find, and they ate only food given in charity, or gleaned from fields and gardens at midnight.
They finally made it to Canada in 1952, and even family members born here are grateful, counting their many blessings ever since.
I don't spend much time wondering whose side they take in this issue.
