I have a few questions about my voting ballot. Maybe I am an idiot but I would rather not screw up.

Where I live we have a county wide measure I am unsure about what it means.

Here it is: This measure initiates the home rule charter process

Should there be an election of freeholders to initiate the home rule charter process for my county?

I have no clue what that means and whether I should say yes or no.


There are two offices each running with 1 Republican and 1 non partisan. I can not find any information that is helpful on the non partisans. I have looked a lot and there is not enough info on them to make an educated guess. should I just vote for them on the non partisan ticket or fill in the blank bubble?

There are two running unopposed in my city districts and other than one that I went to high school with and was an ass back then ( being 30 years ago not a good reason to make my decision for my vote ) I have not able to find info to help me with an educated vote. So, do I vote for them anyway or fill in the blank bubble?

Last question, if you fill in the blank bubble are you required to put someone next to it?

I feel silly asking these questions but I want to make damn sure I do this right.

1. What state are you in?

Contact the local League of Women Voters for a non partisan answer to that.

3. I am in Washington state.

The closest League of women is in Thurston county and I am in Lewis. They will not have information for city candidates. The people I am questioning are county and city.

6. Here's the WA state progressive online source I use. If you let them know your location

they will give you info for your city and district.

But like everyone says, if there's an issue or issue you don't care about, GO AHEAD AND SKIP IT.

Just vote for all the D's. The only tricky part will be if more than one D made it to the top two. In that case, refer to the voters guide for more info.

If you are not familiar, you don’t have to vote for anyone. And if the guy gave you the creeps 30 years ago, there is no reason why you should vote for them now.

Normally, you fill in the oval next to the name. In the case of a write-in, you may have to fill in BOTH the name and the oval next to it.

As for your question about “freeholders”- that is basically asking if you think they should reorganize County Government.

Some places allow counties to change their structure. I have no idea what yours is like. Here is a sample of someone describing that type of ballot question, and what it results in:

5. Not Dumb At ALL! You dont have to vote on ALL things on your ballot...

you can leave stuff blank.

Been doin it for years, as I get too busy to fully research and process EVERYTHING sometimes, but I ALWAYS vote for the easy positions like Senator, etc. In your case, maybe you could call your local librarian and ask if they are a democrat? And if so, have they taken a position on the stuff you're questioning? I would avoid voting for the Republicans.

Another thing, depending on your location the people who count the ballots may fill in the blanks for you, if they have a preference (no they arent supposed to do this, but if it's a small town, they might).

7. I will never vote for a Republican!!

My problem is just because someone is "running" on nonpartisan does not mean they do not vote either Democrat or Republican. Last time we had votes here I filled the blanks with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Ima Beagle, Sergeant Shultz, and Liam Katz. I never leave it blank but I did not know if it was required. I live in a small red town and would never put it past them to fill it for me with those who I would not like to have.
