URGENT---Check Your Early & Absentee Ballots Online NOW: Do NOT Yield to Voter Suppression!

Last edited Tue Nov 6, 2018, 10:40 AM - Edit history (4)

From the desk of: The American M.O.B. (Majority Opinion Blowback)

"My American M.O.B. over the GOP's Russian Mob any day, any time...Let's roll!"

URGENT ACTION NECESSARY: Check online to make sure your Early Ballot was not only received, but COUNTED!!!

"Exact-match signature" is in play in Arizona, as I'm sure it is in many other states. This past Friday, I had planned to knock on more doors, but found myself face-to-face with the proverbial "one in the hand is worth three in the bush" situation: Instead of canvassing, I ended up driving all the way up to NAU to bring my son's college friend back to where he is a registered voter because his straight-Dem vote was at risk of being suppressed.

The problem was that his mailed Early Ballot was going to be rejected because he had completed his voter registration using his full middle name, whereas he signed the green return envelope containing his ballot with his middle initial! Plus, his signature didn't look "exactly" like how he signed his driver's license, which, funny enough, is signed using just his middle initial! He found out about it after checking the status of his ballot on the Secretary of State's online site, which I had told my own son to do, who, in turn, had told his friends.

This young man is an 18-year-old, first-time voter who had no idea what to do when he discovered that his vote wasn't going to count. His own Rethuglican parents have turned their backs on him because he's gay. When he called his mother about it, she said, "Well, maybe this is God telling you that 'your kind' shouldn't be voting." Ughhh!!!!

This is a straight-A student on a 4-year college scholarship who also works part-time because even scholarships don't cover all necessities. While he does have a driver's license, he doesn't own a car and neither does anyone else in his group of friends, so he had no way of getting home to fix the problem. His parents haven't paid a damn penny toward his education and they couldn't be bothered to lift a finger to help him exercise his civic duty either. I swear, these Repugs never cease to disgust me.

My son told me that when his friend came to him on Thursday all depressed about losing out on his first chance to vote, my son said, "We gotta call my mom. She'll know what to do. She don't take no shit from anyone." Aww, bless his heart. [And yes, I did correct his language when he told me that---the word is "doesn't," not "don't," and the double-negative is a no-no. 😉]

Solution:

At the crack of dawn Friday, I made the 3-hour drive up to the mountains, picked them both up (thankfully, neither have Friday classes, although my son's friend did have to get off from work), drove 3 hours back to the desert, went straight to the County Recorder's Office where we got that mess straightened out, stopped for lunch, drove 3 hours back up to NAU, dropped them at their dorm, and drove 3 hours back again where I was welcomed home by hubby with a tall glass of red wine---after which I promptly fell asleep without eating dinner.

The moral of this story is:

Check your Early Ballots online RIGHT NOW! Do not count on anyone notifying you of a problem, particularly if you're a registered Dem, a first-time voter, or have a Latino surname.

Additionally, if you have a son or daughter away at college who has voted via Early or Absentee Ballot, make sure they and their friends check online TODAY to be sure their votes are going to be counted. You only have 1 more day to fix this, guys. After the election won't count.

Arizonans can check their ballots at the following Secretary of State site: https://voter.azsos.gov/VoterView/AbsenteeBallotSearch.do

VOTERS IN OTHER STATES: Check online for your Secretary of State's Office and look for a ballot status link. [If you're in Kansas, forget that; Kobach has removed the links that would normally allow you to check either "Early Ballots" or "Provisional Ballots."] Another option is to check online with your County Recorder's Office. Many use their own software separate from the Sec. of State that you can check with.

Finally, if you find others who are being marginalized with "exact match signature" suppression, do everything you can to resolve the issue by getting them to their County Recorder's Office. Also, make sure they bring with them every piece of ID they own, including voter ID card if they received one after registering and most definitely a government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.).

It is up to everyone to do everything in their power to FIGHT THIS VOTER SUPPRESSION BULLSHIT at every turn and at every instance it rears its ugly head.

Nobody ever said stepping into Wonder Woman's shoes would be easy, but, yeah, that's just how f@*king important this election is at this critical juncture in our history. So, put on your Superman cape or rev up the Batmobile, whatever superhero mojo you need to get you through the extra mile on this one.

Tick-tock…1 day and counting.

You are my kind of Wonder Woman.

My daughter's girlfriend is going to school at NAU now. She called a few days ago to ask if my husband and I would co-sign a car loan for her. (Her parents would, but their credit is worse than hers.) I told her we would, as long as she promised to vote . She said she already had, and now she has a new car!

Flagstaff's that kind of mountain town where NAU borders the downtown area, plus the city bus system is free to students, so many don't really need cars to get around. But, that said, if you want to get home at a moment's notice or drive up to the ski lodges, that's a different story... you're gonna need a car.

That's great that you conditioned the loan on voting and she already had! I think this generation is going to shock a lot of people with their civic engagement.

Call your daughter and make sure they double-check the status of their Early Ballots at the link I provided.

Anyway, thanks for the K&R and pass the message around!

My county Registrar Of Voters even has an app for a smart phones to simplify/streamline things. I don't have a smart phone so I just go to their site to check.

Note: During our June primary, my ballot was noted as received, followed by 'Not processed'. I checked day after day, with the same results. The day after the primary, I called my office Registrar Of Voters to find out what happened and spoke with a delightful woman who checked and informed me it had be received, and indeed, processed. I asked her why I wasn't getting the same results on my computer and we discovered I had entered my DOB wrong (D,M,Y, not M,D,Y). This election, they changed the web page with a DOB box that clearly blocked it by D,M,Y. I like to think my inquiry was the reason for the improved change.

I've also written about the distinctions between Gen Z and Millennials. I think we're going to ultimately be very proud of both groups, but it's the younger set that's shaping up to be what I call a "real doozy."

Most people don't realize that Gen Z (also called the "Woke" Generation), which is currently 5-to-21 years of age, makes up 25% of the U.S. population! As such, it is an even larger group than either the Millennials or the Baby Boomers. For this election cycle, they are the 18-to-21-year-olds going to the polls.

However, that means in 2020, when Gen Z's eligible voters will be 18-to-25 years of age, we're talking about fully 1/3 of our largest generation having the ability to engage politically! That is a huge number that I don't think non-political junkies are generally aware of. This is where I'm going to be focusing most of my 2020 GOTV efforts, starting on Nov. 7.

Anyway, good for you for getting your daughter into the swing of things now. If you haven't done your ballot yet, see my article "How to Vote for So-called 'Nonpartisan' Judges on Your 2018 Election Ballot" at https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211306547 and scroll down to the bottom for the Arizona judges, particularly if you're in Maricopa County where there's a total of 51 of them to deal with.

Thanks for bringing this up Pandora! I had forgotten to post about this topic.

I've been busy trying to increase donations to the group Fourdirections, who are working 24/7 to GOTV & fight Native American voter supression in North Dakota, (and other key senate race states). The ND tribes provided the 3,000 votes that enabled senator Heidi Heitkamp to win in ND. Here is the thread explaining the details:

Onward AND Upward: Am reposting here part of what I just posted to you at your link https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211360747 regarding the urgent call for support of North Dakota's and Arizona's Native Americans in overcoming voter suppression happening right now.

Note: This is not a call to support a candidate's political campaign. This is grassroots, on-the-ground help where you can make an actual difference that could have tremendous ramifications for both the 2018 and 2020 elections. At this moment, they only need 14% more to meet their goal in getting IDs printed and turning out all tribal members to the polls, which will annihilate the Rethuglican's attempts to silence them:

Just popped off a donation at the Crowdpac link you gave (https://www.crowdpac.com/campaigns/388864/take-back-the-senate-in-2018-by-getting-native-americans-to-the-polls?ref_code=carousel&source_code=fourdirections).

Regarding all this voter suppression crap, I say to the Rethugs, "Oh, you're on!" May they reap the winds of blowback.

However small or large an amount everyone can donate to push back hard on these assholes, you need to do this RIGHT NOW...literally, RIGHT NOW. Just click the Crowdpac link above and do it. Less than a minute, done and done.

Then, you need to kick and rec to the top every DU story you see about voter suppression shenanigans and post O&A's link for donations because this is the most urgent thing that is going down as the clock is running out. And while you're at it, kick it out to the Twittersphere and FB too.

Tick-tock...only 2 more days and our Native American brothers and sisters need you RIGHT NOW to help wash away the Repugnants' toxic red tide with a giant blue tsunami. Just do it...make it roll and send that wave crashing down hard!

Per the Georgia Secretary of State's own site for this election in which Kemp is on the ballot, it says, "Absentee by mail voting started on September 18, 2018. Advance in-person voting began on October 15, 2018 and runs through November 2, 2018." There is no way a vote for this election could have been cast before Sept. 18.

Are you aware of the breach that has occurred in Georgia? Take a look at the following story:

https://whowhatwhy.org/2018/11/04/kemps-aggressive-gambit-to-distract-from-election-security-crisis/

In particular, note the following from this article:

"Instead, several logged onto the My Voter Page to look at the code used to build the site — something any Georgian voter could do with a little instruction — and confirmed the voter registration system’s vulnerabilities."

"It is not clear what impact — if any — the vulnerabilities identified will have on Tuesday’s elections, or how they might have affected early voting. Voters should still go to the polls and, if they are encountering problems, ask to cast a provisional ballot as is their right."

Different Drummer, you need to call the Walton County Recorder's Office right now and inquire about your ballot. They should be able to tell you if you're good or not. Then, regardless of the county's answer, you need to take a screen shot of what you're telling me you're seeing when you are logged into the My Voter Page on the Sec. of State site. Also, take a picture with your cellphone.

If the county tells you that your vote isn't recorded, ask them whether you qualify to go vote with a Provisional Ballot. This can be tricky. In Arizona, state law is that if you do a provisional ballot and then your early ballot also magically shows up, your vote won't be counted because you've "broken the law" by voting twice. Talk to the county about this.

Also, here's the special Voter Protection Hotline set up by the Georgia Democrats: 1-888-730-5816. You can call them for advise as well.

Oh, I am so hoping the county does indeed have your vote and this is just more of Kemp's shenanigans on the Sec. of State site.

So, is the August reference all that is showing on your My Voter Page? If you voted back in September, this should by now be showing a status report.

Also, looks like the applicable office you should call just to know once and for all if you're good to go is the "Walton County Department of Elections & Registration." From the looks of it, this seems to be comparable to a county recorder's office. Phone number is: 770-267-1337.

Everyone in my AZ network of family, friends, and colleagues have checked theirs.

Under "Returned" should be the date they recorded a decision on your vote.

Under "Status," it should say "ACCEPTED" in all caps if all is well. (Other possibilities are PENDING or REJECTED.)

Under "Reason," it should say "BALLOT PACKET WAS SIGNATURE VERIFIED AND YOUR BALLOT COUNTED" in all caps. (You will only get this message if the "Status" also reads ACCEPTED.)

Something is amiss with yours. If you mailed back on 10-12, that has been plenty of time for it to show up.

First, tell me what website you are checking your ballot at. Also, are you Early Ballot or Absentee Ballot? Finally, do you have a tracking number on your Priority Mail, and did this entail the green envelope being put into a separate envelope? If you have a tracking number, have you checked on the USPS site?

I am assuming your message is saying you checked the Secretary of State site.

Pima County also has a "Ballot By Mail Status Check": https://www.recorder.pima.gov/VoterStats/BallotInfo

Enter your info at the Pima County ballot check exactly as it reads on your Voter ID.

Let me know your result.

No status of having received it. I will try calling them this morning. I am in NYC for a few months so I can’t go in person. This is very upsetting...AZ needs my vote! I have very bad handwriting, so maybe they didn’t like my signature.

Just woke up and read this. With both sites not recording as having been received, this is not good.

I'm still wondering about how you mailed via Priority. I was wading through some more of Arizona's rules last night and, apparently, you can't put the green envelope inside another envelope. Did your's get put inside a Priority Mail envelope? If so, this might be helpful to explain to the Pima County Recorder's Office, which is who you need to call.

They had no record of receiving it. I explained how I mailed it priority and they didn’t say thT was a problem, only that they couldn’t do anything without a tracking number. I will leave work in an hour or so and stop at the post office I mailed it from. I know the day and time within 10mins of when my credit card was charged...so maybe they can help me find a tracking number. Last resort after that is head to apartment and turn the place upside down looking for the original receipt tracking number.

Thank you so much for your help. Without your original post I would have never realized there was a problem. I have also alerted my friends who voted by mail to use the link you provided to check if theirs was received.

I know of too many kids being kicked out of their homes etc. when they come out. It's a terrible thing to do, in reacting this way, and no wonder that there is a terrible sigma when kids come out to parents, family, friends and the like. Fortunately, it is getting better...slowly but better.

This (the orig. post story) is awesome and I'm in awe of these persons in the help and guidance they offered. It's a side of the human condition I rather see than the hateful and harmful rhetoric.

Again, thanks for the help and guidance you are giving these kids. Who are basically alone in the world, hearing all about this 'horrible sin' and lifestyle, when in 99% of the time, it's a normal life like the rest of the world lives, and oftentimes the hypocrisy overwhelms the reality of the situation.

My son and his friends just read this post for the first time while hanging out together in the dorm. When they got to your and dsc's comments, several teared up because what you've said rings so true for them. My son said it was so important for his LGBTQ friends to hear that there are sane and decent adults out there who support them. Amongst their own generation, being gay or transgender or gender fluid is not an issue. It seems most of their emotional traumas stem from how they're treated by older people, many in their own families. The young man in this story asked me to say bless you to you both.

It's hard sometimes, but you are simply being who you are. Stand firm and strong, for yourself and others, especially others. They'll rely on you more than you think, especially for your strength and convictions.

That's the best thing I've found over the years. We all rely on each other. Thanks so much, bless all of you!

Hats off to you being a teacher in today's environment. I don't know where you teach, but I know wherever it is, you're underpaid.

And thank you for the additional unpaid time you put in to shepherd your GSA. At our local high school, the GSA adviser is absolutely the most beloved and best teacher there.

Looks like Hoosiers aren't using the My Voter software on their Secretary of State site. Tell me what shows up when you enter your info at: https://indianavoters.in.gov/ under "Check Voting Status." If it's like Tennessee, all you end up seeing is that you're registered to vote.

Also, what county are you in? Will do some more looking for you.

Tue Nov 6, 2018, 04:57 PM
Nov 2018

Found a smaller blue button at the bottom-right corner of this same page at https://indianavoters.in.gov/ .

It's labeled "Visit My Voter Portal." Don't know if this will just end up taking you to the same place as the larger button at the top or if it's different. It doesn't look like the same "My Voter" software being used by other states.

If this gets you nowhere, you have a a little bit of time left before county offices close. You can call your County Recorder's Office (might have a different name with 'Elections' in its title) and usually they are happy to verify the status of your ballot.

My niece checked and her ballot is stuck in limbo, uncounted. This is in Maricopa County, AZ

She's been checking online for the past week and it's been saying 'awaiting verification'. She called today and was told that the elections warehouse requested to see her envelope/signature, and but haven't yet. She was then told that she could go in person to cast a provisional ballot, which she did and said "Even though I scanned my voter ID card, which has my current address, they still required I work with an attendant to show another form of ID!" She was told that her provisional ballot would be counted "if needed".

She also reported that 3 other people in line were voting with provisional ballots. One woman brought THREE forms of ID but it still wouldn't take. One man was told that he was removed from the registration lists and then was told to bring 2 utility bills.
