Politico: Trump's final days. What if he simply refuses to leave the WH?

https://www.politico.com/magazine/amp/story/2018/09/19/donald-trump-final-days-220139

What if, after having moved into the White House and gotten comfortable, Donald Trump refuses to check out when his term ends?

Preposterous, you say. No president, not even Trump, would dare to defy 200-plus years of political tradition—not to mention the Constitution—to illegally overstay. But how sure can we be that our norm-busting president won’t attempt to shatter this inviolable standard, too?

Yes, the history and context are interesting reading. Thanks.

According to one 2017 poll, half of all Republicans surveyed favored postponing the 2020 election until new standards made it certain that only eligible American citizens could vote. Respondents who agreed with Trump’s untruths that he won the popular election and that millions of ballots were cast illegally were the most likely to support the idea of postponing the election.

I knew there's no mechanism for postponing elections, but it's good to know congress has already made postponing, or "shelving," one specifically illegal.

Of course in 2017 Republican identifiers were about 28% of registered voters, and these were half of that 28%,so 14%. But still -- how about other factors, like after a major terrorist attack?

I'm with you in thinking it won't happen in spite of Trump's grievances and authoritarian megalomania. He's very timid when faced with people of authority. And there's the family effect.
So best guess is he'd just fold, after one of his periods of raging wore itself out perhaps.

How many times have people said he wouldn't do something, only for him to go ahead and do it? He has a cabinet that will stand with him, he has some kind of hold over Republicans in Congress, he has corporate allies, and religious fanatics, we can be pretty sure that the Secret Service and the FBI is already under the control of Trump loyalists, and let's not forget his Russian friends!!!

Who trusts Mattis or Dunford or any of the Joint Chiefs...the majority of the military are rumored to be Republican supporters...can we actually trust the US military to honor their oath to support and defend the Constitution?

This isn't Nixon, during that time the people could still count on the Congress and the federal courts to act as equal branches of the government...do you, does anyone here actually have that level of confidence in either of those branches today?

You see Trump wouldn't have to confront anyone directly, he'll issue orders which will be followed, and he'll stay in the shadows until it's done! Then he'll step forward and explain why he had to take these actions and will claim it's all about "national security"!!!

I believe there is at least a 30-40% chance that he will make the attempt, more if the Democrats win back the House!!!

I have told people getting him out of the white house is going to look like the final scene in scarface.

He absolutely wood fight it if he had Republican majorities in Congress.

If Democrats had control of Congress, they might have some sort of chaotic exit. But he's immediately going to leverage his lunatic fans and start an active Insurgency.

Law enforcement tells us that if there is a dangerous man in a public space (train, 7-11, whatever) that the most safe way to deal with it is to make a path for that person to get out, and then let la enforcement take him down.

So Trump could be offered safe passage offshore vs. lockup at Leavenworth. Forfeit the assets, take all the clan, and be on some kind of supervised federal parole. Just go away.

I envision Trump inviting his supporters nationwide to converge on the White House, to protect him.

The one personal drawback is if he leaves the WH to go golfing, he may not be admitted back (e.g., helicopter not allowed to take him back to the WH).

And they occupy the WH, armed to the teeth. The news vans are everywhere, Trumpists have flocked to DC, as have the Never-Trumpers. The situation is primed to explode, tempers are short, and 45 wants Sean Hannity only (no one else, just Hannity) to come in and talk, and share his demands with the public.

The weirdest thing is, the scenario I just typed out above doesn't seem so far-fetched. We've seen all of it before, just not with the POTUS involved. (Note: I still don't regard 45 as president, but as a Russian useful-idiot asset, who was NOT put into office legitimately by the citizens of the U.S.)

Visions of a shoot-out in the halls of the White House, with Russian mafia types in shiny suits going at it with buttoned Secret Service agents.

SS will have it all the way, on their home turf. I'm sure there are secrets in the security of the White House that no one knows but them. Lots of movies have proposed secret exits that go to Lafayette Park or the National Mall. They could hustle Trump through the tunnel, or bring in reinforcements through the same route.

Part of the reason given, IIRC, had to do with conflicts with the SS. It would seem like a major clusterfuck for two teams to be operating independently for his protection. Either way, the legitimate security forces will prevail, even if it means taking out the illegitimate forces by any means necessary.

For bugs and not just the biological variety. This malicious turd is capable of just any sabotage from electronic to poison. During the Cold War the United States had to abandon construction of a new embassy due to Soviet sabotage imagine a more high tech Russian Federation version? Yes elections have consequences when they may have to tear down the Whitehouse due to Trump blight. When the new Russian embassy finally opened it cost $240 million to scrub the facility.
