Barack Obama Just Threw the Partisan Punches I Never Thought He Would
He diagnosed the Republican Party's brain disease, and plainly assessed Donald Trump's place in the mayhem.

"But over the past few decades, the politics of division and resentment and paranoia has unfortunately found a home in the Republican party."
That, right there. That is, I believe, the most purely partisan thing Barack Obama ever has said. It's damned sure one of the harshest, and it's plainly one of the most accurate. On Friday, Obama was at the University of Illinois to receive an ethics award named for Paul H. Douglas, a remarkable man who was once the senator from Illinois and whom Dr. King once called "the greatest of all senators" because of his unflinching support of civil rights....
He has gone out of his way to diagnose the prion diseasewhen it started, its various manifestations, and how it now rages out of control, devouring the higher functions of the collective Republican conservative brain. He took hard, clean shots at alleged Never Trumpers both in and out of office, both well-known and anominush. (Hi, Ben Sasse!) He ridiculed the notion that unelected staffers are somehow saving the Republic by disobeying the orders of a crazy man.

(12,448 posts)That wonderful smile, the humor, the intelligence. And complete, coherent sentences! The last should be a given for a U.S. president, but the current president* is barely coherent.
I'm glad he came out swinging, particularly on the need, and the necessity, to vote.

(81,443 posts)when our President was actually presidential.
Who had REAL class and dignity and integrity.
Who was and still is scandal-free.
Who has a very normal and loving family whose greedy, calculating members werent all looking out for ways to cash in on their positions of privilege or get bailed out of obscenely large debt loads.
Who never hesitated to release his tax returns.
Who remains credible, trustworthy, and morally unassailable.
Who tells you the truth.
Who you can be proud of and totally respect.
Who stands tall in the view of the entire world.
Who makes you proud to be an American.
Who youve never had to apologize for, make pathetic excuses for, or feel ashamed of.

(81,443 posts)we could look up to. Who reminded us of all the possibilities of America. What CAN happen in this country when you work hard and use your gifts for the benefit of the greater good.
I think weve forgotten what its like to go to sleep at night knowing the guy in the Oval Office was informed, involved, highly competent, and laser-focused. And not looking mainly to self-aggrandize or make a buck, or blow everything up, make a huge mess, and then throw up a smokescreen or distraction while loudly and repeatedly blaming somebody else.
trump thinks hes some kind of king.
Obama, on the other hand, behaves with genuine nobility.
Btw - TRUE nobility involves character. An obligation to comport oneself with class, elegance, AND humility. TRUE nobility reaches outward toward others rather than greed-grabbing for oneself.
I always point out the most familiar royals as examples. Queen Elizabeth and family are hugely and publicly involved in charity work. Promoting worthy causes and humanitarian efforts. As well they should! They use their fame, glamour, and prestige to draw attention to issues and causes that benefit the public good, whether it involved children's hospitals, the handicapped, conservation, or land mine victims. They at least try to be well behaved and set an example. Compassion is one of their calling cards. As well it should be. Noblesse oblige. Much blessed, much obligated. Its a way to be grateful. And give the people who look to you for leadership and/or inspiration good reason to depend on you.
Theyre genuine class. The Kennedys had it during the latter part of the 60s. Something a guy like trump will NEVER, EVER understand, much less even try to approach.

A president who can actually speak. What a concept!
