After visiting my son and his girlfriend today, my husband and I were driving through Akron, a city we rarely visit, when we were stopped at a red light on West Market Street. My husband happened to glance over to the right .... then he said, "Is that LeBron James' school?"
Sure enough, there it was. An impressive brick building with white columns, brand new, standing there looking a bit out of place in a kind of rough part of town. The sign at the driveway said it was the "I Promise School" and was part of the Akron Public Schools. Large white letters along the edge of the driveway spelled out the words WE ARE FAMILY.
How could Don the Con disparage LeBron and call him stupid and low IQ? After putting so much time and heartfelt devotion towards an undertaking like this? This thought really boggled my mind.
This sight really moved me. Just thinking of how LeBron, a sports star with more than enough wealth, didn't have to put forth this effort. But he wanted to give back to his old community in a way that benefits kids. How many other sports stars would do something like this? It was an awesome sight. The two of us sat there, gazing at this beautiful new structure. Imagining what a great place this will be for disadvantaged kids to be able to succeed in school and in life.
Until the light turned green, and the guy in back of us honked his horn for us to get moving!

Kudos to LeBron James!

(15,067 posts)except on the court! I'm a Warriors fan through-and-through.
That said, I am deeply impressed by what he did for Akron with the school. And he has guaranteed to pay for graduates to go to the local college!
I have always been offended by the obscene pay given to sports and Hollywood stars. Wish more of them would do things like this to lift up kids. And CEOs - their pay is even worse. How many damned yachts does one person need anyway?

(9,257 posts)Its a pretty red area (and unfortunately her parents are trumpers). Maybe becoming less red. She says she doesnt care about politics but she married into my family, its just a matter of time.
Akron-Cleveland are very blue. Even the suburb I live in has plenty of "blue folks". Now down south...Cinci, rural areas...VERY red!

(81,125 posts)Not that much of a sports fan, but I definitely DO salute LeBron for such magnificent leadership. Our so-called "pResident" could take a lesson or two.
Then again, our so-called "pResident" could take a lesson from just about anybody other than a fellow deplorable.

(253 posts)I love when someone drives through Akron, my city, and appreciates something really good going on. I teach in the Akron Schools, and you correctly grasped the hopes and dreams and purpose of the I Promise School. I think LeBron should have stayed a Cav, but as he's said--Akron is always, always, home. Thank You!

Briefly visited Akron years ago coming back from a service job in Lorain. Toured the home of the famous Dr. Bob on Ardmore Ave. and that was a hoot! Wish I could have had longer to tour the town - maybe someday.
Keep up the good work!.......
