we need to compromise ???
I am fucking sick of hearing it !!!
Did John Boehner reach across the aisle and compromise when Obama was president ??? Fuck no !!!
Did Mitch McConnell reach across the aisle when Obama was president ??? Fuck no !!!
Did the republicans reach across the aisle when Obama was the president ??? Fuck no !!!
Did the republicans compromise when Obama was president ??? Fuck no !!!
From day one it was the republicans plan to stop Obama from accomplishing anything and
making him a one term president.
It is apparent republicans think the definition of compromise means giving them everything they want,
and stopping the Democratic party from getting anything done that the MAJORITY of Americans want and need.
The republican party is now the party of Trump.
Do you reach across the aisle to insane people ???
Do you compromise with insane people ???
Do you enable corruption ???
Do you ignore the lies ???
As I type this I am listening to MSNBC and they are talking about compromise.
The Trump party has no intention of compromising or reaching across the aisle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why should the Democratic party be expected to do so ???

From what I understand we cannot stop them at this point, but we can slow them down
as far as appointing judges goes.
It seems Chuck Schumer did not even want to do that.
This does not pertain to Brett Kavanaugh.
From what I understand there is nothing we can do to stop his appointment.

(39,375 posts)The problem is Democratic politicians dont talk like that. Theyre the reasonable ones, you see. They never call the problem by its name. Like our midterm campaign theme: Culture of Corruption. Would it kill us to say Culture of Republican Corruption, or GOP Culture of Corruption? Nah. Keep it generic; people will intuitively know who the bad guys are. Right?
SamKnause
(13,108 posts)Well they need to start talking like that.
They need to grow a spine and fight for this country.
The destruction the Trump party is causing will take generations to repair.
I lay much of the blame at the feet of the Democratic party.
They have allowed the republicans and the Trump party to marginalize them for decades.

Because the political pundits talk about it nonstop.
They never mention how Obama was treated.
They just keep saying we need to compromise and reach across the aisle.
It was said numerous times during the McCain funeral today.

(33,356 posts)Why wouldn't "the media" urge us to compromise? The billionaires club has been getting more and more of what they want since the days of Rotten Ronnie. How many tv networks are owned by middle class earners?
The Fox cultists vote to give more money and power to the same ruthless, selfish people who will replace them with robots as soon as it is cheaper than exporting those jobs. So-called mainstream media goes for the money (see CBS -- https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/leslie-moonves-donald-trump-may-871464 ) and has been drooling over Fox's ratings, influence, and money.
Stop paying for tv against your interests. Stop paying advertisers who use your money against your interests. Shut the whole damned thing down until Citizens United is overturned.

IE: Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan & the rest of the thuglican party AND of course tRump won't reach across the isle because they're evil, rotten, treasonous assholes who only care about this country's wealthiest, like themselves. tRump's totally owned by putin (kompromat), who wants to destroy this country's institutions and pit it's citizens against each other (putin promotes racism). putin wants the USA to be as broken and busted as ruSSia is outside of St. Petersberg and Moscow.

The country's political landscape has been shoved hard right by a relentless propaganda machine and unending attacks on education.

2. As I recall, John Boehner did respond when Obama attempted to work with the Repubs. But Boehner, who was establishment Repub, was dealing with a group of alt-righters. They eventually ousted Boehner.
Boehner was one of the few Repubs who answered like a human being when asked whether Obama was born in Hawaii. He said something like, "Hawaii says so. So I take Hawaii at its word."
But those were more normal times. These are no longer normal times. The House of Rep Republicans are Russian aiders & abetters, and some are traitors. There can be, and will be, no working with them. We can possibly work with some of the establishment Republicans, and in fact, we NEED them, just as they need us.
Same with the Senate.
But the Democratic politicians will need to be very tough, and prepared for a long drawn-out fight. No fear in calling things out and speaking straight to the public. We are NOT dealing with an ethical, honest administration or some in Congress.

(13,108 posts)I am a news and political junkie.
The political pundits say it daily.
MSNBC mentioned it while I was writing this post.
They mentioned it again while I was responding to some of the replies.
It was mentioned during the McCain funeral numerous times.
Boehner saying "Hawaii says so", is not reaching across the aisle or compromising.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)On "news" airings, they don't issue opinion. It's news.
The talk shows, which are not news, those people issue opinions.
I haven't heard anyone on MSNBC say the Dem politicians should work with Repubs right now, since the Trumpers have them captive. I haven't heard CNN shows say that, either.
That's why I asked.
In government, generally speaking, each side has to work with the other, to get things done...in normal times. These are not normal times, of course. So that doesn't apply.
If we get control of the House & pick up some seats in the Senate, our politicians should, and will, try to work with establishment Repubs, because those WILL work with Dems on some things. That's how our government system is set up to work.
Yes..Boehner answering that question honestly, when almost no other Repub would, does show he was friendly with and working with Obama. Maybe you don't know that they're friends? Boehner went to the W H on more than occasion to socialize with Obama...watch a movie, dinner, whatever. So yeah...Boehner did what he could, for some things. But he can't do anything without the agreement of the Repubs, and the alt-right was in a fight for control of the Repub Party. They won and kicked Boehner out of his speakership.
True Blue American
(17,986 posts)Boehner was rude enough to get up and walk out of a WH meeting with President Obama right in the middle of a meeting!
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)So they had a disagreement or Boehner got miffed at something.
But they are friends. Boehner went to the W H on some occasions just socially.
There were plenty of Repubs who were total obstructionists. Boehner wasn't one of them.
But there are policy differences and ideological differences where the 2 parties won't or can't agree on.

(1,604 posts)The thing about compromise is that it is a strategy. I will agree to this concession if you agree to that one. When one party honors the agreement while the other refuses to honor that agreement, this becomes a debit in trust. That is the foundation of all transactions, and the COST of that transaction to the betrayer is higher next time.
The strategy that Democrats typically take is to treat their counterparts across the aisle as if they are initially trustworthy, but to ratchet down that trust with every betrayed vote. That means that they will still concede something, but the value of that concession decreases over time. On the other hand, trust can be built up as well.
The Republicans, on the other hand, will only negotiate from a position of strength, and they regard compromise of any sort as losing face. You see that in their strategies over and over again. It's why they are so hideously bad at governing - they are so afraid of being seen as weak that they can only get legislation through by subverting members of the opposition. The problem with this is that the same trust dynamic that plays at the party level also plays at the representative level. You may get a better deal from the other side, but do that too often and you will be given less trust within the party itself.
I think Democrats will compromise as a matter of course, but the key is really whether the things they have compromised on have value. At this point, they are in the minority, but memories are long.

(14,492 posts)I was in turmoil for many years over the personality type that's characteristic of our typical Republican politician and voter. Back in the 90s, I finally found some good articles by psychologists that had studied this mystery, and that gave me some ease.
This personality type thrives on having a strict authoritarian hierarchy in place, and it spans across their family, their religion, and their political and business support structures. Usually, those mental structures are cast in stone and highly resistant to change. Therefore, their irreversible worship of Reagan and the Graham preachers. Also seen in other nations like the UK with their Tories, so it's not unique to us.
Hard-core attachment (and dependency) to those structures also means blindly accepting the policy dictates from their political parties, church elders, family elders, etc. - with questions or debate rarely allowed.
This view also explains their preference to socially remain within their own information bubbles such as those offered by Faux News and several others. They do not comprehend or accept criticism of their structures, belief and policies because that would endanger the hierarchical structure.
I'm no psychologist or political scientist but instead have a burning curiosity about anything not mostly understood. Much of this still remains a mystery......
