The consensus across the political spectrum in SC is that Lindsey is being blackmailed. Something made him do a 180. I have never liked his politics but I never thought he was this craven. This is out of character for him. Ppl are talking and these are people who have known him for a long time.
Lindseys parents died when he was younger. He adopted his little sister and raised her. Then he joined the AF became a JAG and this gave him time to finish college, get a law degree and take care of her. Then he fulfilled his AF commitment.
I dont know what is going on, but Graham may trying to be signal that something is very wrong by acting so differently. Dont write this off and put it down to him having a change of heart and agreeing with Trump. Lindsey does not have a mean bone in his body. Trump is 100% mean and nasty.
I dont think his being gay is a factor. It is an open secret and he has been elected anyway. This is drawing attention down here because this is so out of character.

(17,111 posts)Unless he is after kids, his sexuality would only move the needle for some. The RW crazies would care, but they have been after him before. Most people shrugged. (I know gay does not mean pedophile as some imply.)
This is something new.

(17,111 posts)There are enough who dont care unless they think it is flaunted and they feel like they better say something. Its a fine, hypocrital line they are trying to walk.

(17,111 posts)Are they threatening family and friends to control people? Sounds bizarre but these are bizarre days.

(32,095 posts)But, yes. There is that, too. In fact, it's probably way more likely something like that is going on. Trumpco are nothing but a bunch of mobsters, and I wouldn't put it past them to engage in that sort of mob behavior. Especially considering they answer to a mob boss who regularly poisons people with nerve agents and polonium. Or, has them tossed out of 10-story windows.

(17,111 posts)and paid attention to politics here, then you have no idea. He is no hero or angel, but this is raising peoples curiosity. I am not the only one who thinks that. I have talked to people who are baffled too.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,869 posts)That has become pretty obvious in light of his recent comments. He might think that if he agrees publicly that Sessions could (or should) be replaced and continues to suck up to Trump as he's been doing lately, that job could be his after the elections. And if that happens, will Graham continue to be Trump's stooge and shut down the independent counsel investigation, or will he let it continue, as he publicly says it should? Has he secretly promised Trump that he'll shut it down if he gets the job? Has he completely sold what's left of his soul?

That is my take on Lindsay Graham....
Self-serving and without question hiding something.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)He does not seek confrontation. He has been willing to stand up for some things, but I cant see him knowingly bringing a spotlight on himself. This is not the way to stay out of the fight. E will get dragged by everybody.
Pachamama
(16,887 posts)....I think he is "following orders"....or else....
And that is completely self-serving.
He would also love to be Attorney General and probably even justifies his having to do this and follow what he is told, as being that he can somehow behind the scenes maybe "do something".
But I do think he is being blackmailed and he does as he is told....at least for now.
I personally think the truth will all eventually come out (including what it is that ole Lindsay Graham is hiding) and he will either try to emerge as a "hero" (maybe that he was working from the inside to fight Trump and the Russians), but in the end, its all about self-serving Lindsay.

(14,574 posts)going back to his time as a congressmen in the 90s.
He has that soft spoken thing, that like Paul Ryan's bookishness, puts a facade to him that people gives people a pretense to think he is OK.
But, nothing he is doing now looks any different than what he has done his whole career - he takes the odd momentary position of saying something to make him look reasonable when he can get away with it, but he has always been a hard line partisan generally, and most definitely when the chips are on the table.

Just under 7 minutes.

(36,527 posts)That is the question every news media should start their show with. Instead, all we get are jokes & snickers about how the GOP Congress has abdicated their duty. I know the snickers & jokes are done with a tone of disbelief, but it still lends an air of non-seriousness when they do this. They should be calling them out by name. McConnell, Ryan, Hatch, & down the line.

(70,744 posts)On top of his normal condition of weaseldom, blackmail sounds plausible, and is the m.o. of criminals the ilk of J. Edgar, Roy COHN, Roger STONE, and SHITLER.
As to what the blackmail might be about, the key word in "open secret" is "secret." If it hasn't been that much of a hindrance to him, why keep on with the secret?

(6,139 posts)you can only imagine, Graham is not openly gay by any means. He is single as far as we know. This means he hides his sexual relationships and there might be kompromat on his private life with potentially very explicit details. While there is nothing wrong with that, he and gop especially in SC may think otherwise.
