I don't normally start threads here but I didn't see this on DU and thought this was a brilliant exchange that highlights the *major, major* difference between republicans and democrats. It's the kind of thing you don't typically hear in the mainstream.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez torches CNN's Chris Cuomo for slamming Progressive Agenda (VIDEO)
--
Ocasio states it brilliantly. This is a message that can get people off their asses and vote - it matters and Democrats have *great* ideas and plans to make our system of government work for as many people as possible, not just the rich. The republican said, "...my tax dollars...". No, OUR tax dollars.
Great point she makes - Why do we only have empty pockets for the things that are morally right to do - education, health care, environment - but seem to have limitless funds for military spending, tax cuts for the rich, etc. I'll add a few more examples here - subsidies for big businesses, and endless loopholes for people to hold their money offshore, free from taxes while the workers of this country are nickled and dimed for everything they earn?
As she said in the end, "it belies the lack of moral priorities people have right now, especially [in the] republican party."
Damn straight.

(30,481 posts)I suggest going to different links to watch the video. Its not as commercial spammer EW sells it at the link.
EW has a history of normalizing Trump and attacking Democrats. He commercial spams this board directly.

(4,192 posts)"My tax dollars"... OUR tax dollars. Can't be stated enough. We matter, our votes matter. I know you're not arguing against that but this answer that Ocasio gave is a very clear rebuke of such a common republican screed.

(30,481 posts)He gave her his platform, lobbed her a softball, and people like commercial spammer EW are trying to make it divisive.
As I said, she did well with it. There is such little hostility Im sure she knew how the run-up was going to go beforehand.
Shady as fuck how EW is promoting this. Then again, EW has repeated on multiple occasions that Trump want single payer and is going to deliver.

(4,192 posts)Typically Dems are not given the time to answer clearly and without interruption. Your points though are not what I find important in this. But your focus is your choice. It is what it is and others may appreciate it. If you want to work on "lobbed" questions, there's full time work on Fox and a depressingly large numbers of conservative hate-talk radio stations around the country.
Egberto is not our enemy. He's doing a hell of a lot more than I am to support progressive values. If you've got better ideas on his self promotion, I suggest you take it up with him. He and his methods are hardly the most important point to be made here.
Bottom line (for me) is this clearly shows the difference between Dems and repubs and why our progressive values *and* platform are imperatives to the survival of this country and our personal freedoms. They need to be out in the open, clearly stated and discussed.

(11,736 posts)Yes the response was a good one, but as I said in my response to Egberto's post, the headline is misleading and falsely pits Cuomo, who has been pretty good about holding everyone accountable, against Ocasio-Cortez. He asked a valid question, with I might say, an intonation that was not the best, and Ocasio-Cortez gave a good answer. I did not see any hostility from Cuomo or from Ocasio-Cortez. To characterize it that way just propagates the conflict narrative.
Cuomo has a platform from which he let Ocasio-Cortez give her passionate answer.

(4,192 posts)Missed the post yesterday...busy board. But main point is the content and the contrast between repubs and dems. I think would get some people who normally sit out on elections to see how important it is they get out and vote.

(11,736 posts)The way I usually frame the difference between Democratic Party and Republican Party is that Democrats believe that government has a role to play and a responsibility in helping the most vulnerable people in the country to have equitable access to the opportunities and benefits this country has to offer. Democrats see government as a way to curb the excesses of the wealthy and powerful, a counter weight. Republicans see government as the guardian of the status quo, where the owners of capital and property have the protection of their right to accumulate. They use government to enforce the old social order where for the most part, White, Christian values are promoted and other viewpoints are excluded or minimized.
Of course you will never hear a Republican state that, but they throw around phrases like "Personal Responsibility", "Family Values", "Religious Liberty" and others which are basically code for the exclusion of populations that are non-conforming.

(6,137 posts)She seems talented; smart, articulate, fearless, knowledgeable and willing to learn. On top of all that she is stunning which easily makes her media magnet (an asset in todays environment). However, I have not yet seen her debate any repub opponents.
I dont know for a fact if medicare for all is the best option, are there any alternatives? Ive always thought that ACA was a great start and could have been improved by adding a public option, state mandates, etc. The premise was that the cost would start to go down after 10 years. This makes sense because initially there would be a lot of sick people in the system who were denied coverage before. ACA also had a competition component that stimulates private hospitals to become more efficient. I dont know what is the pathway for Medicare For All to replace ACA. I think dems need to figure out how to articulate proposals concisely yet with enough detail to be able to defend this.

(4,192 posts)It's sad that republicans don't even want people to have affordable health care. Simply callous. So it makes it difficult to even get to a point where we can consider improvements. Instead they want to kill the ACA before it even has a chance. Version 1.0 is never the best in anything.

Access to healthcare or not, EVERYONE is going to die and need a funeral. No one AVOIDS dying because they have healthcare.
gtar100
(4,192 posts)Funeral costs is a perfect example. Also emergency room costs when there is no other choice except to die. The rich will always be able to afford better health care but the current system is so damn lopsided toward the interests of money that the poor and working classes are generally left to the mercy of charity or they risk facing insurmountable debt. If charity were enough, these kind of problems would have been solved a long time ago.

(67,782 posts)...who among us will not ever have funeral costs? Will the quality of anyone's healthcare affect the COST of that funeral?
No.
