Study Says Coffee Increases Longevity, Just Don't Caffeine Yourself to Death Like Balzac

Coffee is many things. A finalist in the World Cup of Best Ice Cream Flavors. The only thing keeping you awake right now. A stimulant to which we’re all terribly, terribly addicted. It’s also, according to the latest food study, the fountain of youth humanity has sought for centuries and even crossed oceans for. To think: It was roasted bean water all along!

The study by the United Kingdom’s National Cancer Institute purports that drinking coffee can help you live longer. The study surveyed 500,000 adults in Britain, and found that after a ten-year period the coffee drinkers had a, uh, lower risk of death than non-coffee drinkers. Of course, everyone has the same risk of death, which is 100 percent.

Those surveyed answered questions about their coffee, smoking, and drinking habits and medical history, among other things. The coffee drinkers of all levels were 10 to 15 percent less likely to die than those who didn’t drink coffee. But! The great news is that, according to the study, in the meantime you can continue to be a caffeine addict and drink up to eight cups of coffee a day in your efforts to live longer.

Look, it seems like there’s a food or drink study for anything you want to believe is good for you. Food companies fund studies to prove that their goods are healthy; one major producer of studies, Cornell’s Food and Brand Lab, was found to be publishing shoddy research. So, broadly speaking, take these studies with lots of grains of salt, which is good for your blood pressure! Coffee alone has been the subject of other studies claiming that it’s good for your heart, prevents liver disease, and more.

and was literally taught drinking it would result in poor health:

D&C 89 18-21

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.

21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

can have difficulty managing hot liquids and become non-users of coffee, therefore dying as non-users, tho they may have been users for many years, during which they DIDN'T die.

Here's something I learned in my college days - long ago. If the coffee is of good quality and made correctly - no need for any additives. If you have to add cream, milk or sugar to make it drinkable, then it wasn't good coffee to begin with.

That's been my motto for almost 50 years now.

I like coffee with and without milk. My boyfriend always buys more milk (and other things) than he is able to consume though, so I usually add milk to my coffee just to get rid of the surplus so we don't throw old milk away.

Also, cappuccino is great. I can't make real espresso at home, so I usually get cappuccino when we're at a café or restaurant where they serve good cappuccino. It's always best in Italy of course! But now that they have that shitty new government I'm not sure about our next vacation.

I don't sleep very well to begin with, and caffeine exacerbated that problem. I'm down to an average of one cup of caffeine a day, and the rest of the day I'm doing decaf. I miss the jolt I get from caffeine.

However I have learned to forego the cup of coffee after dinner. That is definitely too much for me. I usually have a couple cups of regular Joe in the morning, and by noon I've already switched to a cold drink (or water).

People who drank coffee, no matter how much or what kind they drank, were less likely to die over that 10-year period than non-coffee drinkers, they reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Internal Medicine.

...is that you can use it to make a mocha milkshake.

You need a blender, coffee ice cream, a little bit of milk, and some chocolate syrup (like Hershey's) to make the most wonderful treat on a hot summer afternoon. Yum!

Will try it. We serve coffee ice cream with a spoon of stewed peaches with rum or at Christmas with crushed Scottish shortbread and red and green cherries.
