Restaurant manager in Canada fired for refusing service to customer in MAGA hat

“As a person with a strong moral backbone, I had to take a stand.”

PATRICK SMITH JUN 30, 2018, 4:54 PM

Not every restaurant can be The Red Hen.

A restaurant in Canada fired its manager for refusing to serve a patron unless he removed his “Make America Great Again” hat.

In a statement, Sequoia Company of Restaurants, which owns the Teahouse in Vancouver said it fired the manager for violating its “philosophy of tolerance.”

But newly sacked former manager Darin Hodge says he has no regrets about the incident or his subsequent firing, saying “As a person with a strong moral backbone, I had to take a stand against this guest’s choice of headwear while in my former place of work.”

of respect for their country and humanity. I have a feeling that his dismissal is not going to go over well with Canadians.

My mother would have insisted that any man remove his hat once indoors, as members of my family still do. A mother’s lessons tend to last a long time! There is no need for a hat unless you’re outside or you need to proclaim to the world that you’re a racist idiot who is just too ignorant to be part of the human race. Perhaps that’s part of the problem—these people were hatched by right-wing media so we should rightly call them hatchlings.

He is not the owner. He has no right to make that decision for the owner. I would serve anyone who was not disruptive irrespective of any other consideration (this includes convicted child molesters, etc.). If it was someone like my Representative (who has virtually no public events), I would explain to him that I think that is wrong and that he is failing to do his oversight role in Congress.

I would use progressive discipline, starting with one to one counseling to discuss the owners expectations.

It would depend on the circumstances. If he/she was a good employee who agreed to seat customers on my terms in the future, then I would retain them.

As an employee, he didn't have the right to refuse service to someone who was not disruptive when doing so goes against company policy.

On edit: I think the progressive route, rather than outright firing would be appropriate. I, however, am not the owner of the restaurant, nor the HR person. So I will defer to their right to choose.

On the other hand, look at the views on MAGA of a judge and others:

'Richard Spencer's Credit Card Was Apparently Declined for a $4.25 Drink', Vice, May, 2018.
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a3awqj/richard-spencers-credit-card-was-apparently-declined-for-a-dollar425-drink-vgtrn

..And, apparently, he needs the money. Like—really needs it. According to a Facebook post from the co-owner of a bar in Spencer's hometown of Whitefish, Montana, the guy who popularized the euphemistic term "alt-right" couldn't even afford a $4.25 bourbon over the weekend..Spencer isn't the only alt-right figurehead who's been having a hard time visiting local watering holes as of late.

In April, a judge ruled that bars have every right to kick out people wearing MAGA hats if they want. That same month, fellow fallen asshole Milo Yiannopoulos and his sidekick Chadwick Moore were chanted out of a Manhattan pub by a local Democratic Socialists of America chapter.

But rather than kick Spencer out of the Great Northern Bar and cause a scene for the rest of his patrons, co-owner Doug Rommereim chose another shaming tactic, he explained to AM station KGVO.
"I would never put someone's credit card up like that because they got declined, I would never do that," he said. "Except in this one instance where I thought it was kind of funny."

Unlike other celebrities who have had their receipts posted online for stiffing local establishments, Spencer didn't just forget to tip his bartender—it seems like he might be completely out of money. Of course, there are other reasons a card could get declined other than lack of funds—as one Redditor suggested...

remove their hats in social settings, regardless of what's written on the hat or cap. My mom used to call men who didn't adhere to that form of respect as being "uncouth", or lacking basic manners.
The MAGA crowd certainly fit that bill....
