The Red Hen Restaurant In Lexington, Virginia Was Forced To Close After Protests And Threats

Editded to add: Closed for the day, not permanently.

The Red Hen had planned to open at 5:00 p.m. as scheduled, however after both protesters and supporters of the business began showing up hours earlier in the afternoon, the restaurant remained dark throughout the evening. Initially, the Washington Post reports that it was just two men holding Trump banners and a confederate flag, but eventually the crowd grew so thick that police were forced to actually close off the street.

One gentleman of clearly extraordinary intelligence even showed up with a bucket of chicken manure, and was promptly arrested after dumping it on the front of the restaurant — as you can see in the local news report, below.

left on the doorstep of some official?

Was it an official with ICE or the Border Patrol? I forget.

That wasn't civil. On the other hand, that one presumably pro-immigrant act of extreme non-civility doesn't say a whole lot about the millions of other people who are pro-immigrant or at the very least anti-child-abuse. I'm sure that at least some of them don't carry around dead, burned dogs, seeking out doorsteps to leave them on. That would be a health hazard, if nothing else.

They're as monolithic as we are, no matter how you switch up "they" and "we".

I'm sure there was somebody on the other side who said, "Guy brings a dead dog and drops it on a family's doorstep, and you think civility is the correct answer?" and who was, to my thinking, an idiot.

And I’m not familiar with the incident you are talking about but just because it is regarding the border patrol that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily pro immigrant. Go on YouTube and see all the right wing wackos freaking out about border checks interior to the United States. Which, ironically, is due to their whining about undocumented immigrants.

...and passive resistance.

The entire movement was not about saying "Howdy do, folks, thanks for breaking my skull and firehosing my friends into the street."

It was about expressing your right to live in civil society, go to school, ride a bus, and be served coffee at a public counter -- standing, sitting, walking where racists do not want you to be, and passively letting them hurt you and arrest you in front of cameras for the whole world to see.

This is street theater where people get hurt and even die. It does not work without mass media present to inform the world of the appalling injustice of the larger society.

Mahatma Ghandi developed it and used it for this exact reason, and ultimately the British couldn't take it any more and let India go. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. studied Ghandi and adapted the method for use in this country -- and the rest of the country was appalled. I was a little kid when the images of snarling police dogs and faces twisted with hate came into our living room via TIME, LIFE, and a b/w tv.

Civil disobedience is not the same as civilly passing the crumpets to a racist in your home. By the same token, you get to decide what sort of behavior you are willing to speak out against wherever you are. Publicly Shaming a member of this nakedly fascist regime seems like an idea whose time has come -- just be prepared to take the consequences.

NB: The issue of passively taking the beatings got to be old for some in the movement after several years. See: Malcolm X, Huey Newton, et al.

Trump flings verbal shit. His followers fling actual shit. A progression along the same line.

Trump and his followers spread shit everywhere they go.

Full of shit, all of them.

They are nothing but shit.

14. It all started with Sarah's tweet
Fri Jun 29, 2018, 11:57 AM
Jun 2018

Nobody anywhere would have known a thing about this, except Sarah had to send out her passive-aggressive tweet, vindicating herself and trashing the restaurant. Oh, and using her official government account to broadcast her shining virtue, knowing that the flying monkey brigade would be mobilized and the Red Hen would get paid back for the insult to her august personage.

Sure enough, her boss weighed in on twitter, using the account he uses for official government business, transferring the abysmal health code record of his own restaurants to Red Hen. No further impetus was needed, and the flying monkey swung into action, targeting not only the Red Hen in Alexandria (since Sarah helpfully identified them in the original butthurt tweet), but restaurants that had the name Red Hen in other states and even one in Canada.

As swift as Sanders and Trump were to jump on Red Hen, we haven't heard a peep from either of them scolding their flying monkeys for their bad behavior. Similarly, the usual gaggle of pitty-pats and schoolmarms have been silent on this as well. Apparently picketing throwing chicken shit at a restaurant is not considered "uncivil" by any of these people.

Sanders and Trump both made their tweets knowing full well what would follow. The message to the American people couldn't be clearer: Don't dissent. Don't oppose the administration. The administration will pay you back and more for any disrespect you show. The media will be silent at best, and will pile on for any reason at all. And you'd better change that look of disgust on your face for one of fawning and obsequious admiration right now, mister!
