I started lurking here during the Bush years, prolly '03? Didn't start posting till prolly '05. Lost my info and re-signed up in 11 I think. Anyhoo, I've laughed, I've cried. I've met people who've become friends, and fellow music lovers and musicians who have become deeper friends. (In both cases, y'all know who you is!) I've met animal lovers with kindred spirits that I adore. I've argued and agreed. I've fought, and thought, and changed my mind.
But at the center of it all, there's a community. A beautiful, diverse community of people of all races. All creeds. All types of sexuality. All ages and all levels of education. WE are America my brothers and sisters. WE are the ideal that this nation was founded on. We may not always get along. We may fight each other tooth and nail (especially during the primaries jesusfuckingchrist and I'm just as guilty). But we're all fellow travelers united by our love of what this country really stands for.
It's not taking care of those who don't need help. Not exclusion based on color, religion, sexuality, etc. It's a sense of justice. For all. It's a sense of I am my brothers keeper. It is a sense of protecting the weakest among us. It is a sense of Yes We Can build a better society.
I'm proud to be member of such a community. Maybe I'm a little too deep in my cups and being sappy, but I dig this board.

(23,356 posts)I appreciate the folks who know more than I do about lots of things. I appreciate the humor and the heated debates and minds willing to remain open to my thought processes. It isn't perfect and that's okay. There's a wealth of experience here. I didn't find this board until October 2016. It has saved my sanity - or at least whatever is left of it.

(11,803 posts)Never lost a job. Never got a DuI. Never been arrested. Never had alcohol poisoning.
I've been in bands with alcoholics and I'm not that guy. I realize I could become that guy. Truth is, I'm a pothead and having to give it up has been difficult. Not proud of it, but it is what it is. And yeah, I drink often. But i dont drink lots. When was the last time you saw, me, slurring my typing.
Seriously though, i appreciate the concern. You just displayed the sentiments i tried to convey in my post and i love you for it.

(3,975 posts)I was still drinking at your age...and it was part and parcel of my day...but it doesn't go on forever. I watched my parents have a "party" every nite, but they got into their 80s and then that was it. She is still alive at 87. He 90.
I am on an Allman Bros jag reading everything I can get my hands on....I saw them in 1970 if SF, and could take them or leave them as a band. But the history fascinates me. Duane dead at 24 riding drunk, and ditto Oakley. Gregg with the liver deal...My brother and best pal are primo musicians, and they didn't do what Duane and Gregg did... they are pretty straight now, and thin, and play all the time. I can send you a video of Frank..
I am always curious about people...I am not gonna say I love you, but have one for me tonite !!
Glamrock
(11,803 posts)And I hope I'm not being some kinda awful trigger for ya. It's more about being who I is and honest than trying to offend or hurt anyone when I say I've had a few, dig?
And the Allmans, yeah they had problems I'll never have.
But definately send the vid, love to see it!

Seriously, it's very encouraging to read everyone's posts here and know that not one of us are alone in our frustration with the government and the state of the country today.
You better duck sister! That was just uncalled for! Not only are you dealing with a white male, you're dealing with a rock singer. Have you any idea the size and fragility of the ego here?
In all seriousness, you're second paragraph (the polite one, ahem ) is why I posted. You nailed it on the head.

(5,530 posts)alt-right 4chan frat douches. DU is like a sanctuary from the rest of the garbage on the internet. Thats the problem with Reddit - posts can be upvoted, so people paste the same shitty memes over and over to get upvote points.
DU tends to have older participants, so theres more maturity here in general than the rest of the internet. People do fight with each other, but its 99% better than the rest of the internet.
