Voting irregularity found in controversial 94th District election
Some Newport News residents who might have voted in the tied race for the 94th House of Delegates seat were assigned to the wrong district.
After the November election, a state Department of Elections review of registrations using new mapping technology found a possible discrepancy between voters addresses in the Lee Hall precinct and the House district where they were recorded as living, Commissioner Chris Piper said.
Piper said a check by Newport News General Registrar Vicki Lewis confirmed the discrepancy.
He said Lewis has corrected the errant assignment. He gave no more details about the number of voters possibly affected.
Lewis could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Shortly after the November election, officials discovered that 147 voters in a split precinct in Stafford County were given the wrong ballot, and so did not vote in the race that Del. Bob Thomas, R-Fredericksburg, won by 73 votes. A federal judge declined to call a new election after three voters sued to say theyd been disenfranchised.
