How would you feel if he lost and the Republicans and Democrats ended up in a 50/50 tie in the Senate and Pence would break that tie? The important thing would would be for a Democrat to win that seat.

since the Reagan era. Of course, there are some exceptions in there, but as a whole we're far more comfortable with authoritarianism than we've been in a long time.
