Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was at Walmart today...Two Mexican ladies were
in an aisle with their kids. They were speaking Spanish. This lady goes around them and then tells her companion in a loud voice, Im so sick of these damn Mexicans!! 😡😡😡. OMG I was so pissed. Took everything in me not to tell her that I was sick of racist @ssholes like her. #Trumpsworld..They see the racist @sshole in the White House so feel empowered to say racist things...I did not say anything but I gave her the dirtiest look ever. Left no doubt what I thought about her. Hours later and Im still pissed.

(36,827 posts)As a Native American living in Texas I see a lot of bumper stickers declaring themselves as a "Native Texan" which is obviously a play off of "Native American". Knowing a few of the people who display such things, I know they certainly aren't what I'd define as a "Native Texan" because while they may have been born in the state, they certainly aren't indigenous to it and furthermore virtually all of them would very much like to expel many of those who most certainly are indigenous to the area who they pejoratively describe as "illegal".

(17,751 posts)hoping next time, god/dess forbid there is a next time, you can be in solidarity with the victims of bullying.
One great technique is to ignore the tormentor and just chat in a friendly way with the victims, till the bully gets tired of being ignored and goes away. Or combusts and burns down.
Solidarity is the key.
Thanks for listening to my .02. Silence is not golden.

(36,827 posts)I'm not saying those in question can, but there's definitely differences in appearance, language, and mannerisms. Sometimes it's as subtle as telling the difference between someone from the US and an English speaking Canadian and sometimes it's as pronounced as telling the difference between someone from the US and someone from the UK. There's also sometimes significant differences from different regions of Mexico. Naturally from the xenophobic wingnut point of view everyone who speaks Spanish and is brown is Mexican, even though neither one of those things are exclusive to Mexico.

(54,503 posts)And by that, I mean languages native to the American continent, such as Lakota, Navajo, Hopi, Iroquois, etc. etc. etc. Then some European-Americans who think the fact that the success of their flea-bitten ancestors' brutality somehow makes it OK for them to proclaim that one European language (English) is superior to some other European language (e.g. Spanish or French) might think twice. If their way of doing things had been practiced by the people who were here when their ancestors landed, things might have turned out very differently:

(38,349 posts)The checkout and customer service clerks are bilingual.
About half the conversations I hear in Wal-Mart are entirely Spanish, maybe a quarter drift between English and Spanish, maybe 15% are English speakers like me, and the other 10% miscellaneous; Native American languages, Arabic, Tagalog, various Indian and Chinese languages...
My wife speaks English and Spanish at work, and our kids speak enough Spanish to get along in bilingual workplaces.
In our community 40% of the children in our public schools don't speak English at home, but their children will speak English. That's pretty much how it's always been in the U.S.A..
I used to run into old white people who fondly remembered a highly segregated community where nobody would dare speak Spanish in a predominantly white shop or restaurant, but they're all dead.
WhiteTara
(29,732 posts)That's why you are still upset. A quiet, firm tone and say, "you may not talk that way. You are being disrespectful and should apologize." Of course they won't, so you should apologize for them and give some small compliment to the women who were abused. You'll feel better, maybe still a bit charged but in a good way rather than anger and despair.
