How many homicides go unsolved in California and the nation?

Homicide clearance rates, 1980-2012
California had the highest number of reported homicides in the period, 113,762.
The state with the second-most was Texas, with 70,807. New York followed with 57,641.

The map below offers a state-by-state breakdown of the percentage of slayings solved, according to the Murder Accountability Project.

A lot of times it's because the cops don't wait for all the evidence to come in

... be nice to see the numbers broken down by density of population. Are more homicides solved in urban or rural areas?

Although it would be interesting to know why Illinois sticks out like a sore thumb.
