The ability to be open to new ideas and the willingness to change your mind is one of the most important attributes a person can have. It is still important to have solidly held beliefs based on logic, emotion and facts. Yet being able to change beliefs even strongly held ones is what allows us to grow as human beings. It is perfectly understandable and ok to change your mind or take a new position base on new information or viable facts previously not known.
Stubborn rigidity is the sign of a weak and fearful mind. Denying facts and the most obvious seems to be a common human trait. It is particularly true when we cannot handle the truth or the bold facts.
Sure Joy might have been homophobic years ago, but she probably has changed with age. And I doubt she remembers any posts she might have written. Memory fades all to quickly some time. Of course there are times when memory should lapse perhaps.
When we look back at or former selves from decades ago many of us probably do not recognize that person. I know that when I look back at attitudes and beliefs and actions of my former self I am sometimes even shocked I thought or acted in certain ways when I look at myself today. The former and present me are worlds apart in some ways.
Personally I try to be open to new facts or information all the time. And there are times that I have to radically change my beliefs, positions or actions. I may not always be successful or may suffer blind spots. but I hope to try.
As I near my 10,000th post I must look back at my successes, miserable failures and hidden posts. I am proud of some yet embarrassed by others. What was I thinking and why was I so over the top?
Joy would have perhaps been better off saying I probably posted such a thing, but I have changed and evolved to understand how I was in error then.

As for the hacking thing, if she really asked the FBI to look into it, I advise a wait and see approach. Is there any doubt that she did? I find the whole future of digital information, with the ability to reproduce people's voices, etc., really scary, and I'm waiting to find out how we tell truth from falsehood.

(12,344 posts)So i am good what that. As for telling truth from falsehood in the digital age, I think we are going to have use chain of custody and eyewitness account. It won't be enough to show a video, people will have to personally swear they saw it happen.

(82,383 posts)people who actually changed their views with learning more. Isn't that what we want people to do? Listen and then understand and change their minds? Who would if they knew the previous views would always be held against them?
