Baking soda has been used as a home remedy for generations due to its antacid properties. Yet its benefits run even deeper, and new research may explain why it is an effective aid in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as arthritis.
How can this kitchen staple change the body's inflammatory response?
Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is a kitchen staple commonly used as a raising agent for cakes.
That being said, it has also made a name for itself as a home remedy for various conditions. Half a teaspoon of baking soda is often taken to ease heartburn or acid reflux, for example, and this substance is also used to whiten teeth

I remember growing up using it as a tooth paste and having a box in the fridge to absorb smells, my mom said.

(16,254 posts)It actually felt good and clean to run your tongue over your teeth when you were done. Cheaper, too. Remember, WWII was just wrapping up and there weren't a lot of personal items available.
Our teacher also taught us how to hang our socks and underwear over a chair before we went to bed to "air out" before morning. That was in the days of wringer washing machines and nowhere near the amount of clothes today's children possess.
Those were the only things I remember from that class. That would have been in 1944.

Occasionally use baking soda and water for a case of nasty Heart Burn.

I also use it when baking and it's always in our bathroom cupboard for teeth cleaning and gum wash.

Amazing how the Towel Fiber becomes coated with the Soap and Fabric Softener fats and oils.

(34,661 posts)twice in plain hot water to start the cleansing process . Some of the Bargain or Generic Laundry Soaps carry a high animal fat content, and the dryer bakes it on big time. As well as fabric softener sheets and liquids. The Goddess of the House uses two cups per load. The towels will regain their absorbency more and more with each wash. Plus,no more soap smell in the Washer or from the drain. BTW,splash a cup of and Vinegar in the Hot Water. Increase the Acidity in order to cut the grease build up on the fabric.
We sure miss the days of line drying of linens. Especially Towels and Jeans as well as Sheets and Pillow cases.

(12,232 posts)it started raining though, and since this is Seattle that happened more than a few times.

(269,278 posts)The only time we use the dryer is if it's raining andI'm pretty good at knowing when it will rain. Truth is everything lasts longer using line drying. I will never get accustomed to people in the sunny Caribbean using the dryer.

(3,608 posts)along with vinegar it keeps drains clear and smooth and you only need the chemicals for serious stuff.
The box is right...there are literally hundreds of uses and now you've thought of one more!

(7,814 posts)I've had a touch of arthritis the past few days. I took ibuprofen, but it has been giving me hives and swollen lips lately which is worrisome. Aspirin and tylenol do the same.
The article mentions autoimmune diseases and food allergies. I wonder if it would work on pollen and dust allergies, too...?

(58,773 posts)NSAIDS give me constipation, and I don't like taking pain meds of any kind. I have an addictive personality, so there is an inherent risk for me.
Not sure of the dosage, though.

(7,814 posts)but for a different reason: their effectiveness wears off quickly and side effects accumulate. By that I mean that if I get an owwie (like a sprained ankle) and I take iburofen for a few days, by the last day they don't seem to make a dent in the pain while I am covered in hives and my lips are swollen round the clock.
As for the dosage, I'm going to try a teaspoon in the morning in a glass of water and maybe in the evening, too. Pretty much when I remember to.

(58,773 posts)thanks for the info. I'll have to pick some up, I think. Part of my current problem is also that I've been too sedentary. Trying to walk more, but difficult with the bad knee.
Best of luck. Keep us posted if you can.

(34,661 posts)the Hot Water. We have the a older washer with the center agitator as well as softener dispenser. We put a cup of Soda into it.
The Vinegar erases the acidity of the water in order to cut the Oils and fats build up on the towel fibers. The Baking Soda will freshen the smell of the towels and wash cloths.
Otherwise, the towels will have a grease smell to them.
Check out a couple of U tubes . The Retailers sure do not want you to find out about this cleaning method.as well as making the towels more absorbent and soft to the touch.
Have a couple of towels that we bought back in the late seventies that were always used in the camper for the kids . Kids and dirt go together and the rest is history. Those towels, hey, they seem to be the fav's.

Even watched him pour A%H in his hand and lick it off. Seemed to work, always gave him pain relief. On Rainy Days, the Soda Box sat on the Cupboard for easy use.

(46,166 posts)She always put a small pinch of soda in her pot of tomato sauce. It makes a smooth flavor. But don't overdo it or there won't be much flavor at all and you really can't put it back in with more herbs etc. I did that once when I thought two pinches would be okay. So keep it small and enjoy the difference.
We also clean the dishwasher with it. First, we put a cup of white vinegar on the top shelf and run a regular cycle. When that's done, I remove the cup of water out, shake a bunch baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher and run another cycle. Takes a while but it keeps it fresh. Btw, the dishwasher has a stainless interior.

(57,727 posts)Baking powder is a raising agent that is commonly used in cake-making. It is made from an alkali, bicarbonate of soda, and an acid, cream of tartar, plus a filler like cornflour or rice flour which absorbs moisture.
Sodium bicarbonate (IUPAC name: sodium hydrogen carbonate), commonly known as baking soda, is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3.
....
Uses
Cooking
In cooking, sodium bicarbonate, referred to as baking soda, is primarily used in baking as a leavening agent.
....
Baking powder
Baking powder, also sold for cooking, contains around 30% of bicarbonate, and various acidic ingredients which are activated by the addition of water, without the need for additional acids in the cooking medium.
Many forms of baking powder contain sodium bicarbonate combined with calcium acid phosphate, sodium aluminium phosphate or cream of tartar. Baking soda is alkaline; the acid used in baking powder avoids a metallic taste when the chemical change during baking creates sodium carbonate.
